What are some of you expecting?

Some of the criticism here is puzzling. So, Dooley hasn't magically found All-American's, a dozen 1st round picks and a 3 deep roster within the first three games of the season? Seriously, you're surprised?

I don't think some understand how difficult and long the task for Dooley is at this point. Our recruiting has been thrown in disarray for two straight years and, on top of that, we have Fulmer recruits getting beat out by walk-ons. It's bad, really bad.

And, I don't want to hear this stuff about not "celebrating moral victories". There's moral victories when you suck as a program and play above yourself once of twice without the prospect of getting better. Then there's the moral victory of a down program showing promise and improve to reach a higher plateau in the future. We are the second one today.

So, anyway, if you have any issues with not winning today and people looking for positives from this game, you might want to open that link at the top for our roster and refresh your perspective.

I'm not celebrating anything about this loss, but to gain an appreciation for the unbelievably delusional nature of this fan base, all you had to do was take a quick look at one of the many preseason prediction threads. Most of the people on this board were predicting 8 or 9 wins this season. I predicted 4 wins.

Dooley and his staff are doing a fine job so far. However, he was handed five cans of Vienna sausages and told to use that to serve a 4-star dining experience to 100 patrons. He just doesn't have anywhere near the talent level on this team to compete with even the average teams in the SEC.

We're going to take a lot of beatings this year. If Saban or Meyer were coaching this team, they would be taking a lot of beatings this year. It is what it is. It is going to take 2 or 3 more years minimum for us to have any chance to compete on a week to week basis with the elite teams in this conference.

I can't stand all the people on here expecting a 9-3 or 10-2 season. Dooley has had ZERO time to do anything! We have talent, just not a lot, and we're very young. Once we get some depth and Dooley has time to recruit, and things are still bad, then, and only then, can you complain!

I really think people just expect us to win 8-9 games because we are Tennessee. I can't tell you how many times I've seen, "We'll be fine. We're the Vols!"

I think many of us are expecting Dooley to borrow some magic dust from Fultanicroom so he can sprinkle it on our problem areas.

Not questioning your fandom, just your perspective. If you think that there won't be repercussions for the absolute disarray for the last 3 years, then you are kidding yourself. We'll stop having those problems once we stop having to play mutliple walk-ons and get to have a steady coaching staff for an entire recruiting period.

Nobody's content with saying "things are getting better", but simply complaining about what's hapening on the field without putting it together with what's happened off it is ridiculous. You can either choose to be frustrated with unrealistic short term expectations or look for the long term progressions.

You are 100% accurate in your post.

It's not just CUM. ST's is a problem in most of our games. A good coach takes advantage of their opponent's weakness and that's what CUM does to us.

To be fair I believe I saw a stat that Florida had only allowed one yard total on punt returns this year and something as ridiculously stingy last year.

It's not just that we're not that great at specal teams but they're just pretty dang good.

Nonsense. There is no difference the past 3 years than from the previous 2-3 before that. The program as a whole has taken huge steps backward this decade, and today showed nothing...absolutely nothing, has changed. ST are still an issue, we still have no QB, third and longs are irritatingly bad, and we are way behind on talent. These were all issues before the last 3 years.

Okay. Answer me one question. Exactly where did you expect Dooley and his coaching staff to acquire additional talent between last week's Oregon game and this week's Florida game? Did you somehow think that those talented Oregon players that beat our ass last weekend would like Knoxville so much that they would defect and join the Volunteers team for the rest of the season? This team is SERIOUSLY deficient in talent, and it will continue to be so for this entire season. What does that mean? It means that we're likely to lose every meaningful game this year. Next year we will likely be deficient in talent (an upgrade from the SERIOUS talent deficiency of this year), and we will show some improvement with that additional talent and with the maturity of the young talent that we have on the team this year. The problem here is you delusional fans that see Juwaun James, Hunter and Da'Rick Rogers on this team and think that because we have talented freshmen on this team that those players will be able to compete with the equally talented sophomores, juniors and seniors that are lining up opposite of them every week in this conference.

I expect us to lose many games this year.

However I also expect a team that doesn't quit. That is 2 weeks in a row.

If you think the team quit today, then how do you explain our TD to get to 17 points? That score was nothing but heart.

Wow, when you take a moment to round out your negatism it can actual produce something sensible. For the record I agree with your post except I'm standing by 6-6.

What can I say? I'm complex. I still think you're being a little optimistic at 6-6, but I hope you end up being right.

We had a walk-on freshman DT Joseph Ayres in the rotation tonight. This tells us how bad we are hurting with our depth. I think Dooley is doing a pretty darn good job with what he has to work with. If he has time to recruit and build this roster back up, I think he will get us back to good times.

And still not get defensive stops on third down, etc.

We'll be bad defensively on 3rd down all season. It has nothing to do with the coaches. 3rd down is where not being able to get pressure with your front 4 really starts to show up. Until we get more and better DL's, we won't be good on 3rd down no matter who the coach is.

IMO the guys showed alot of heart last night from last week. Dooley should get a lot of credit in that we lost only by 14 points. There were some flashes from some of the players on what being a volunteer really is.

It was a moral victory, but still we lost by 14 which is never anything to start celi
brating about.

If it were a moral victory, I think we'd feel better about it. But there are some positives to take out of this game.

This was not a moral victory, last year in the swamp was maybe a moral victory, or Bama last year. Losing at home by 14 to a young struggling team is not ever good.

I really think that we will beat somebody on the road in October. I've had the GA game circled for a while. A win there may just do Richt in and could really pump our recruiting in our neighboring state.

I expect this school to return to its prime. However, as a coach i know that isnt done overnight. I know that regardless of who we get in to coach, and what scheme we run, it takes time to develop and progress. Some folks have the unrealistic expectations that CDD should be winning immediately with this "load" of talent we have. I donno about you, but i can look at a great deal of our players and see that them being a division 1 standout is very far fetched. I am genuinely digging the fact that they are giving their all for tennessee again.

I do think they're giving their all for Tennessee to this point. I also think the coaches did a better job in getting that effort for all four quarters this week.

It will take a while to bridge the talent gap, but to get the time and chance to do that, CDD will need to keep showing that he can get his team to give their all.

They're still going to lose a lot of games and that will make it harder to get that level of commitment out of them.

It's just an extraordinary challenge for a coach who really hasn't proven himself up to it. If he pulls it off, he has to be better than a good coach. He'll have to be a great one.

If he does beat UGA (and that's the game I have my eye on as well at this point), it's going to get interesting in both Athens and Knoxville. He'd basically be making the statement that he can win with less time and less talent than can CMR. A Dooley who makes that statement to Georgia fans is bound to be in demand.
