Ok, I follow recruiting pretty close and let me first say that I am very pleased at the path our coaches are on. We are still in on several big recruits and have assembled a respectable class to this point. The reason I feel compelled to post this is that as I watche the Army AA Game today, I just cant help but wonder what the heck some recruits are thinking. I understand recruits jumping on the the Oregon and Auburn band wagon to a point and I understand recruits commited to power programs that have established NFL pipelines. What I fail to understand is how players commit to programs with no future. Look at WR Singleton who commited to Ole Miss. They are coming off a horrible season and they have not been relavent in college football for decades. They have no offensive plays or a QB to make things happen. He will end up with no future and never get drafted. Look out LB Townsend. Cleamson is the yearly underachiever who does nothing. Their coaching staff is a joke and most likely will not be there in another year. Look at a stud like DE Bowers and tell me how he helped himself by committing to Cleamson two years ago. Now look at Tennessee, a DC who turned down Texas and a pro style OC and a proven OB. It is a program that will put players in position to prove their skills. Why would either of these too players go anywhere else. Ok, rant over. :loco:

I understand what you are saying, but talent will usually shine regardless. Bowers is projected top 3 pick in the draft isnt he?

Some of those guys choose schools based on proximity to home. I don't see Clowney even considering USCjr if he wasn't from South Carolina.

i also understand what you're saying, but not all big recruits are going to consider us just because we're Tennessee

You have to admit that you can affect your draft stock a little easier on defense. As a receiver your qb can make or break you and ole miss has no real future there right now.

If you are a stud receiver and go to a school with no good receivers you will get the majority of receptions....with a school with 2 proven recievers and a proven qb you must compete for playing time AND share catches

If you have the talent it makes no difference whatsoever what college you attend. The NFL is loaded with players from schools few have ever even heard of outside their own fan base. Bottom line if you attend a power program in college you will get more publicity but the NFL finds and drafts the best talent be it Bama or Bedrock. Athletes know this too, therefore there are many other considerations that go into a kid's decision where to spend his college years.

The Mississippi kids want to stay close so family can come to games. There is a comfort level. Clemson has a nice campus atmosphere. Auburn, well we know what they do.

I agree, I always think the same thing. an OL during Under Armour practice said he was still going to visit Alabama and New Mexico. NEW MEXICO REALLY!!

And why does all the QBs go to USC when they have enough now.

georgia tech had a reciever drafted in the first round last year, so it doesn't always matter what offense you play in

Talent will shine regardless, but you can make your road easier by choosing teams that have talent to surround yourself with.

I have a job that lets me travel all over the country, I can tell you this....not many people look at Tennessee as a major program. Many people say they remember us being really good in the 90's but really not much since.

I don't get the Ole Miss thing either but Clemson is a program that has gotten alot of publicity due to Spiller as well as there entrance into the stadium. Don't sell Oregon short on anything, Phil Knight has made his personal mission to make Oregon relelvant and is making their facilities head and tails above anyone else in America.

No like the guy said top 3. Every mock draft i've seen has AJ Green going to the Panthers.

Ok I was just going by what was on espn this morning. Its not like I really care either way...

Its hard to admit when your program is down but thats just the way it is.....We are competing against programs that are run like NFL franchises.

We have 2 of the top talent laden states in America in this conference (Florida and Louisiana) and probably the best closer in the game in Saban down at Bama.

Back in our hey day it was us and Florida fighting for SEC supremecy....Fast forward to the early 2000's .....Saban woke up a sleeping giant at LSU and made it cool for kids in La to attend LSU, Meyer took Florida to higher places than Spurrier (and Miami and FSU sucked), Richt had Georgia rollin till he wqas bit by the Fulmer bug, Spurrier FINALLY has gotten USCe going strong and those top recruits are now staying in state (and going to Clemson). Now Saban goes to Bama and they're back, Auburn is paying players and at one point had 2 Top 10 backs in the backfield and has had 3 undefeated seasons in the last 15 years.....

Its harder to compete in this league and until we win an SEC CG we'll continue to be fighting an uphill battle

I've seen a couple people say that some recruits like to stay close to home... Why don't we have more recruits from TN? You can't tell me that there aren't good players from the Memphis, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville, and even Williamson county areas. I understand that LA, GA, AL, and CA are hotbeds but our school is in dadgum TN! ALSO, our campus is crap in comparison to other schools like AU, so maybe UT should focus on making the campus a little cleaner or at least make the sidewalks match....

I kind of like our entrance by running through the T! So kissing a rock and running down a hill sounds like you'd sprain an ankle!?

Who knows what these kids see now days, it's beyond me... What ever is new and hot that's what they flock to. But as far as programs like ole miss, Clemson etc I don't they might have something a kid likes you never know.

Ok so staying close to home and show casing talent is not as important as coaching? So how come some of the most productive coaches have come from smaller (as you would call it) not competitve or non top 10 year in and year out schools? Chip Kelly - New Hampshire, Gene Chizik - Iowa State, Urban Meyer - Utah, Jim Tressel - Youngstown State, Bobby Petrino - Louisville, I mean I can keep going if you like. It would depend on my skills set, family situation, and the coaching staff. Remember the guy who gets most of the kids to the NFL are the ones they wake up every morning and look at in the mirror.

Take our basketball program, Tobias Harris and Scotty Hopson were very similar in the type of hype they got when they came to UT. One is the first one in the gym, working on post up moves, free throw shots, and his overall post footwork. The other is down at the barbershop, fixing his flat top. Just shave it and get back to the basics already!
