What an opposing coach says about the end of our year

So 80% of the board is happy with 8-4 seasons and no SECCG's? Talk about setting the bar as low as possible.

It is what it is. Progress is being make and will continue to be make regardless of what the dozen doubters spew. The program is in the best shape it has been in the last 10 years. Recruiting is looking very good. We have improved our coaching staff. The players are working harder in their strength and condition efforts. We had six players drafted this year compare to 0 the last two years. We have a new AD.The APR is the highest ever.

I guess if we wanted to go back to where we were 6 years ago, we could again fire all the coaches, lose our recruits, have half the team transfer, hire another coach and start all over again so the neagvols could start a new decade of bitc*ing and complaining. I don’t think I want to go that way again when the program is on the upswing. You may, but over 80% don’t want to. Go back to playing your flute in the band.

The question isn't "progress" though pretty much any competent coach would have made some progress over what UT has been over the last several years.

The question is about the things that have prevented MORE progress and what those patterns of behavior and performance mean for the future. From there, we get to the VERY important question as to whether the progress made is enough. Some of us say it isn't... some of you say it is.

Exactly.

It's hard not to show progress after where the last coach left you.

Here's what an opposing coach has to say in Athlon about the end of our year last year:

"I don't know how they'll be on defense. As everybody over there got hurt, they got really bad, and you can sit there and say it's the coaches fault, but when you're playing with second- and third-stringers in our league you'll get gashed, especially on the back end. Vanderbilt hung (45) on them and it's not like Tennessee doesn't know what they are doing"

What about it Negavols, you are always blaming CBJ? Here's an opposing coach saying you can't blame coaching.

You're 100% right. Tennessee fans should never expect our defense to hold a 5-6 Vandy team averaging 21 ppg under 45 points with only 8 of our 11 defensive starters on the field. That's just crazy talk.

If he had been up to the job... he wouldn't have waited so long and probably wouldn't have brought those guys with him to start with.

But...but...but...he brought the BEST STAFF IN AMERICA with him.

Sorry, but at the time I thought that was a d..n stupid comment, and I still do. If they were that good, they wouldn't all have been at Cincinnati.

I remember the Fl game too, and sitting on the lead against OK, and SC last year, and Vandy, and.....if someone says "chart" to me anymore, I gag:sick:.

I hope he succeeds. But I thought he was average, middle of the pack conference when we hired him and have spent last few years hoping I am wrong. So far, imo, he is just not up to SEC football coaching standards. Not saying (and hoping like crazy) he won't learn and improve.

there were a lot of injured players, but should Butch not have known they where out of shape. some of the injuries where questionable . a lot of player just quit playing hard for Jones. in the opener he had all his players and won . but that win was a long shot like GA. they count 9-4 was very questionable . they did worse than there record.

Who quit playing hard? Not counting Hurd, rumor has it he was told to quit, PWillie got tired of being called Phillip, so don't count him either.

I don't think our team was out of shape. While we were lining up the opposition was cramping and getting "injury" time outs. If we were that out of shape what were they? A bunch of slackards that don't understand the grind.

Go Vols!

The poll said over 80% says it is.

The poll says 80% are satisfied being a second tier program that frequently loses winnable games and blows great opportunities to win championships or significant bowl berths?

If so... that's just sad.

First, there never will be a valid excuse for losing those games to Vandy and USC. Our third stringers should be better than anything Vandy has and certainly shouldn't give up 45 points to them under any circumstance.

Second, not having your 2s and 3s ready to play at a moments notice shows how ineffective Butch is at everything except recruiting. Getting drubbed by Bama with all those injuries is one thing but losing to clearly inferior teams is another.

Finally, allowing your team to be torn apart by the actions of one jack-rabbit(Hurd) again shows the ineptitude of the coach and lack of control issue that exist in the program.

Finally... Part II, Butch was lucky to not have lost 6 games last year including what would have been a devastating home opener against a cupcake program who probably could have beaten Vanderbilt and USC.

Sad, indeed -- but such is the current state of TN football.

Quite a fall for such a storied program.

When evaluating Butch's performance you must start with this baseline assumption... literally any warm blooded bipedal creature and most invertebrates, fungi and amoeba could have improved UT football from the point it was at under Derek Doolittle.

Think of the tens of thousands of kids who went through 4 or 5 year programs never having known what good UT football looks like. 9 wins and a win against Florida are literally the greatest things they have ever witnessed in Neyland Stadium.

It's like polling a bunch of slumdogs from India on what they think of KFC.

All true guys. But these quotes are purposefully anonymous. I tend to agree with the assessment. At least I hope he's right and our coaches don't suck.

Well, most of the ones we thought MIGHT suck are gone. But to hear some tell it, some of the replacements are no better. Let's hope they only have momentary thoughts of sucking.

^ Complains a lot about negavols complaining about Butch and program, doesn't see irony ^

How often do you attend in person a Vols game only to shout out your disaffection for a coach, a play call, a player, or the team's execution in a given series? Care to expound on the irony of that?

What percentage of men complain about the nagging of their wives/girlfriends? Care to expound on the irony of that?

What percentage of men look at their own penises while standing to urinate in a public restroom? Care to expound on the irony of that?

Because the coaches were never the problem to begin with?

I remember when an opposing coach, Nick Saban, said that Dooley would be a great coach at U.T.....
My point is that we can't necessarily go by what opposing coaches say. I find that opposing coaches can have a lazy player and when they transfer, they will give them high praises......

I just don't understand why Butch is put into this bubble where only his team was affected by injuries and personnel issues.

It's not like the rash of injuries was unprecedented. It was really really really bad, no doubt.
But not bad enough for a free pass, which is what the sunshine pumpers keep handing out like candy.

I feel like we've recruited enough quality players over the past four years that our defense shouldn't be in a state where we lose to vandy by double digits. Who did we get back in time to beat Nebraska?
