What about Brent Venables/DC for Clemson

A contract is a contract. The buyout goes both ways. Frankly, I don't think it belongs in any contract, but as long as it's in the deal, both sides should be bound to it. If UT were smarter about the hires, they wouldn't need worry about dealing with the buyout. It would serve only to protect UT against a great coach leaving them early. Nope. UT got into bed with Kiffin, Dooley and now Butch. They own it.

If the buy-out is intended to protect us from a coach's bale-out, then I suggest Tennessee never include again for the next 10 years -- even if Currie finds a "genius" let him go if he's not content here. "the next one will look like a genius" means, among other things, that this one does not / is not.

No.

The list goes:

1. Jon Gruden
2. Chip Kelly
3. Scott Frost

Nobody else should be acceptable to the Tennessee fanbase. We're done with taking chances. Its time for the sure thing. Those are the only 3 coaches available that would make Tennessee a national title contending program.

Scott Frost's buddy from his Oregon days just got named AD at Scott Frost's alma mater Nebraska. We are not getting Scott Frost. You are way off base with your rant...but that's expected...you have never let facts get in the way of your posts.

Anyone who can't see where Scott Frost is headed isn't very bright. Ah yeah. Nailed that one. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

I'd take Venables all day. Just not sure he wants to be a head coach. Maybe 25 million would change his mind.

There are a lot of coaches that are exceptable just not to some fans

I really would not put any faith in what FANs say or post. The history of posters is much worse than any coach who has ever coached. Our AD will do what is best for our University and does not need the uneducated advice of posters and the media.

Many of his assistants are new this year. Guys like Hoke, Warren, Beard and Rock get a pass because of that. Now Thig? Wells? Both of them can go. Gillespie is very good.

The fact is Butch has only had 1 really good LB in 5 years. JRM. Every other LB is either average to below average. Even DK, he is not some special LB. as a matter of fact, he is about average for the SEC.

They may be average for SEC LBs but they were still our best and they always gets hurt at first of season

His son enrolls at Clemson this year and is playing somewhere on D. He's not going anywhere for atleast 3 years imo.

You serious Clark?

Truth. His son plays OLB and is a 3*.

Jake Venables, D W Daniel, Outside Linebacker

You are right.. a 4 million a year raise not matter at all..

Are you going to pay him 5.7 mil? Because he's already making $1.7...

I hope the AD goes all in for Gruden, but if that doesn't work out, I would be okay with Venables.

Interesting I just peeped on the Auburn boards, and they are firmly off the Gus Bus and making up their own lists. Auburn fired a coach a year after winning a national championship, so I think it would be even harder for them to attract a top name, but we're going to have a lot of competition in the SEC this year for coaching changes.

This is 100% accurate. He is not leaving Clemson while his son is on that team. If you think otherwise, you dont know much about Venables.

Scott Frost is going to be a great head coach.

Possibly, but you can base that opinion more on his pedigree rather than him blowing out nobodies in AAE or his minimal HC experience. He is still a Google hire which is not what UT needs right now.

Don't believe any of OP's three listed or Venables will come here. It's going to be hard VolBros but the reality is no "established" coach is coming to this fire sale. We'll be lucky to get a Mike Norvell, which to me isn't a bad hire. He already has West Tenn, Miss, and Ark covered in recruiting, plus with all the best players coming out of high schools in middle and east Tenn, he could possibly keep a Top 10 class for next year. He also has an OC whose last name is Dickey, who some may remember that last name. It's life's symmetry, it just seems to fit. Anyway, hope AD Currie makes a good hire for all our sakes...it's been hell so far...sure hope we don't get any hurt against Bama...gonna be nasty, for sure...and

GO VOLS!

Wells is the second worst hire of the off-season next to promoting Scott to OC. He's only marginally better than Mahoney, and of all the positions that UT was deficient on under Butch's tenure, offensive line has been the worst, and needed a seasoned position coach for the rest of the offense to even have a chance.

Venables, the DC of a national championship team that recruits incredibly well, would be an awesome pick. He can bring former Vol staffers, Dan Brooks (DL coach) and Marion Hobby (recruiting coordinator), home with him.

This is BS but someone "in the know" told me Verables would be the first choice to replace butch. I can't imagine not having chip Kelly as the #1 target.

What has Venables done to warrant being at Tennessee?

OK, but if none of those will come, I'd say he would be in my next 3. I don't know much about Patterson...Maybe a James Franklin...but Venables would be right in there, for me.
