We’ve been through rough pathches before back in sixties and seventies, etc. we are definitely in the pits. But we are still UT and have the resources and traditions. We just need heart and effort on the team. How did we get through past rough patches?

We need the right coach and some good recruiting classes. LSU was mostly mediocre (and occasionally terrible) throughout the 90's and then they hired Nick Saban.

From 1975 to 1980 it was a pretty rough stretch. It took Majors 7 good seasons to get things rolling. He def wouldn’t have been given that amount of time these days we were patient because he won a national title at Pitt and was a Tennessee boy. The last ten years since 2008 are the worst stretch in football history.

Although I agree, I am tired of this argument. With the talent he has he should NOT have lost to Georgia State. We keep hiring the wrong coaches and then paying their buyouts when it would be cheaper to just hire a higher ranked coach. Hire an established coach to get the train running again..

I go further back than 1967. Other that Johnny Majors, an outlier because he was a “legacy”, Tennessee has never gone after and hired a big name, big conference coach. They have chased up an coming assistants hoping to hit a cheap home run. I don’t see any reason to believe that will change when the decision has to be made to replace JP. UT will not pay the price it takes to hire a big name coach. That is the only reason we have not hired a big name in the past 12 years. It’s not fans, it’s not expectations, it’s not a short leash mentality. Truthfully, I’m not sure the fans would support such an expenditure either. Check the backlash of spending the money to keep the basketball coach.

I remember those years very well. Even though they we’re mediocre years, there were leaders on the team and players that always gave their all, it seemed. There was some pride also. A lot of that seems to missing these days. Players seem very “soft.”

Hire a big name coach like Chip Kelly? How is that working out for UCLA?

We weren't recruiting against very good to elite Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Florida, LSU and A&M. The college football landscape has changed so you can't go back 40 years to see what worked. Heck even 20 years. We were good in the 90s cause nobody else was except Florida. Teams are also on a more level playing field. Any school in the sec can beat you any given day.

To me hiring coaches is a needle in the haystack of finding one that has a high probability of getting you too championships (national or conference) consistently or at least being in talk of national contention cause there's are only 1 or 2 at a time and they're not leaving where they are. Right now that's Dabo and Saban. Then you have the Lincoln Riley and Smart that will recruit highly and win a lot and get you in the conversation but just can't get over the hump yet but again they ain't leaving There's a lower tier that will get you wins (which I would settle for right now!) But probably nothing to show for it but that's the kind of coach we need right now. JP may even be the guy but he's off to a horrible start for sure.

The lost is unexcusable no doubt. I think it falls on the whole team and not just the players or coaches or one group. Firing will just prolong the rebuild but after next year JP needs to be in the 10 win range. 3 recruiting classes in this day is enough to make you competitive if it's the right guys and you can develop and coach. I've said it before but I've never been sold on Chaney.
