I've searched for a thread to attach this to but wasn't sure where it belonged. Forgive me if something similar exists and I missed it.

Those that have been slamming CLK's methods of recruiting, his treatment and "Evaluation" of the Offensive Staff still in place, and his disregard for the poor commitments involved, stand by. You're about to be made aware of how smart the "Young Ball Coach" really is. Now that the announcement is near of Dave Clawson's hiring at Bowling Green, watch what Latrell Scott and Stan Drayton do, regarding the commitments that they are primarily responsible for. I expect that within a week, Clawson will be announcing his new staff and those two will be on it and loading up their U-Hauls.
The remaining "Jarvis Giles" out there will be gone also, broken egos and all.

Lane Kiffin understands, better than anybody on this board, how strong the bond is between a recruit and his primary contact on staff. That is why he hasn't put the emphasis on re-recruiting Drayton's and Scott's recruits like all of us experts think should have happened. He knew that, in most cases, it was a lost cause. He is busy establishing relationships with new recruits that will fill the needs of his program and are open minded and not attached to an assistant coach rather than the program.

He knew this day would come, sooner than later. He knew these assistant coaches would be leaving him and the program high and dry as soon as Clawson got a new job. His "Evaluation"has been to determine who is recruiting for the good of the program and who is in it for himself. Drayton's evaluation was easy and wrapped up quickly by how the Jarvis Giles re-recruitment went.
Give the man some credit. He knows how this stuff goes on every year at this time. He has just been trying to get one step ahead of it.

Many of the VolNation have completely underestimated Lane Kiffin and his commitment to excellence. He has only laid down a few brush strokes on the canvas and the painting isn't distinguishable yet. Wait until it's finished before you criticize it. I think we will appreciate and admire his first work of art here, when it is completed in February.

Great post, but personally I think we should keep Scott.

He's really one of our top recruiters, especially in Virginia, where he pulled Boyd, Askew, and could be getting Morgan Moses.

Especially since there are already 9 Virginia kids in the 2010 to watch list, including 2 from Askew's school who would both be great pickups.

I'm sorry, but what are the ties of Scott and Drayton to Clawson, other than 1 year at UT?

I believe Scott came with Clawson from Richmond.

Drayton was with Florida before this year.

As far a CLK is concerned, i think he's doing a good job.
He's changed the face of the program as well as given us new life.

We've got dial-up and that's it unless I splurge for Hughes.net. Can't even get a signal on a cell phone down here. I can see Blue Springs marina from my back porch so that probably gives you an idea where I'm at.

50 ft of it on a shallow cove in an entry level project I'll probably be working on 'til the day I die. But I'm simple and I love the privacy. Houses all around me are weekenders that usually only come up to their summer homes on the weekends. I'm the "Trailer Trash" of the neighborhood.

Exactly right, its his program now, and he's making damn sure every one knows it. He's doing it his way, absolutely nothing wrong with that IMO.

Looks like someone wants to 'believe' so badly.

All indications are that Kiffin has gotten off to a pretty rough start, and unless some miracles occur, we may be looking at a 2009 season comparable or worse than 2008.

I doubt anyone has "underestimated Kiffin and his commitment to excellence." It seems, at first glance, however, that Kiffin has underestimated a few things:

1) The difficulty of recruiting in an area so saturated with competitive schools. USC is virtually the only game in town in California.

2) His current QB situation. Remember that Kiffin hasn't been through practices to evaluate the talent on the current roster. He's just seen film. Anyone who watched UT play this year knows we need a QB that can read defenses. He doesn't exist on the current roster.

3) The difference between West TN and the rest of TN. Just because Memphis is technically in Tennessee doesn't mean there is necessarily any sort of state loyalty. The Marlon Browns of the world will continue to be difficult to snag until we are perennially in the top ten again. Success is the best recruiter.

I reserve the right to remain skeptical until real positive strides are made on the recruiting front. I feel the hiring process was rushed, and Kiffin, although from a great pedigree (both literally and career-wise) may not have been the best choice in the long run. He is still very much of an unproven commodity.

I hope to be proven wrong, and soon...
