2 time super bowl winning. Stat leader in multiple categories, often regarded as the smartest QB of all time. Compared...to...Pat White. Amazing.
Tavon Austin (2013) 12 Career Receiving TD
Robert Meachem (2007) - 27 Career Receiving TD
Justin Hunter (2013) - 17 Career Receiving TD
Denarius Moore (2011) - 17 Career Receiving TD
Cordarelle Patterson (2013) - 18 Career Receiving TD
Kelley Washington (2003) - 12 Career Receiving TD
And finally...
Donte Stallworth (2002) - 35 Receiving TD
Cool story. The problem you're going to keep running into is this:
I know your program better than you do. And I know the Vols better than you do. And I'm correct.
Tavon will be cut from an NFL roster after this season, and be known as one of the worst first round picks of all time.
Tavon Austin has heard it through his first two years in the league. He is a bust...
His other legacy, is that he graduated college an illiterate:
@ GottliebShow Tavon Austin scored a 7 on his Wonderlic, that's not sweat on his jersey, that is drool
Peyton Manning lost to Memphis. A superstar doesn't lose to Memphis.
Slaton running through Rutgers, Cinci, USF, and UConn clearly did impress someone, since he was drafted in the 3rd round.
It doesn't matter what Auburn or FSU's record were, they still have NFL talent. You said they didn't perform against NFL talent.
Tavon has had a better NFL career than any Tennessee receiver since Donte Stallworth.
WVU fans, in one eloquently written rebuttal.Boy, you are one cocksucking ************.
I did overlook that, my mistake. And the other 4 WRs I listed that are light years more impressive on the field?Tavon has 24 total TD's in the NFL.
And Cordarelle has 18 total TD's. He only has 7 receiving TD's.
We're talking about COLLEGE. You were talking about Pat White losing to bad teams in COLLEGE. So I used YOUR LOGIC in regards to Manning. IN COLLEGE.
WVU was in the BigEast/AAC bro. What they did in college is completely irrelevant. Quick, name some star players you really care about on the 12-0 UCF, Boise State, Marshall, and Fresno State teams of the past. The only measuring stick we can adequately use to compare those players is the NFL. That's where they've been put up against their peers. That's where their legacy is cemented. That's where all of WVU's players have failed. That matters. We're talking about COLLEGE. You were talking about Pat White losing to bad teams in COLLEGE. So I used YOUR LOGIC in regards to Manning. IN COLLEGE.
Whoa buddy....do what?
Peyton Manning was 39-6 as a starter, won an SEC title, set SEC passing record after SEC passing record at Tennessee. Then, as the greatest statistical QB in NFL history, is the only QB ever to win super bowls with 2 different teams (went to 4 total Superbowls) and was, until recently passed by Tom Brady, the winningest starting qb in nfl history.
You started off this thread with a good post, with your WVa scouting report. But you crapped the bed on this post with your Peyton Manning can’t be a superstar because of one inconsequential loss to Memphis in 1996. Manning, a college football HOFer and the only 5-time MVP in NFL history, was a superstar in college and beyond a superstar in the nfl.
You’re surely not comparing Pat White and Peyton Manning as a college or any other type qb and pushing the idea that White was better. You’re surely not doing that, are you?Tavon has 24 total TD's in the NFL.
And Cordarelle has 18 total TD's. He only has 7 receiving TD's.

Ok, just checking, missed the point you were making.I was replying to the guy that said Pat White couldn't be a college superstar because he lost to 2 really good USF teams and a 3-9 Pitt team. It was a response, and a valid one. College superstars get upset all the time. It doesn't mean you aren't one.
You’re surely not comparing Pat White and Peyton Manning as a college or any other type qb and pushing the idea that White was better. You’re surely not doing that, are you?
And again you assume that's "special" in a sense that I don't think it is. The SEC has players who play roles within their O. Many of them can step outside that role and do more. I'm not saying WVU's guys aren't good. I'm certainly not saying I know how far UT's D has come to predict they'll stop your passing game. But in watching what they did last year, I see a scheme that helps WR's and then I see what OSU did to slow that scheme down. IMHO, UT's athletes are as good or better than those you faced vs the Cowboys.SEC is loaded with more SKILLFULL players, but that's not necessarily what makes for the best receiving corp. What makes WVU's receivers so special is how clearly defined their roles are, and just how good they are at performing those roles.
Not more than 5 years ago... we heard that story about how Iowa's OL was going to run roughshod over a young, honestly pretty middling, UT team. UT supposedly had no chance. The Vols won 45-28 in a game not as close as the score. It's like Iowa's offensive line. Tennessee may recruit 4 and 5 star lineman, but Iowa clearly has a better line than Ten and most teams that clean up on blue chip lineman.
I would like to see that "paper".The Vols on paper are NOT more talented than WV, it's just the opposite, unfortunately.
Will Pruitt have the Vols playing above their heads, I hope this is the case, because it will be necessary to pull off a Tennessee win.
going to give my own scouting report of UT. one word I will use CONSTANTLY is "potential". looking at the stars and what some lower rated guys have done in the past this UT team a lot of potential. but due to coaching and injuries we haven't gotten there. also with a new coach and style of play it will be a question mark of if it will all translate. last thing is if this game was later in the year I would like our chances better as people get settled, including the coaches.
QB- last year we were a quarterback by committee, and we may be this year as well. and not in a good way. Jarrett Guarantano is a R-SO and started some games last year, was one of the highest rated QBs when he came out. last year showed a tendency to hold the ball too long and got sacked WAY too much, partially on him and partially on the OL. great arm talent, should know the offense fairly well. Chryst is a fifth year transfer from Stanford where he started, but got injured last year before heading to us. much more the game manager type. we have a couple young guys who have a lot to prove, UT fans should be hoping they don't see action.
OL-the potential here is crazy. We have one of the best OL in the country in Trey Smith a SO, who was a freshman all american. he is coming off a health scare but by all acounts is fine and back as the best in our group. he played all over the place last year, but this year may start at LT. he is the best player on our team, and it isn't close. which isn't as much of a knock on our team as it sounds. we have a R-Jr in Drew Richmond who was a five star recruit who has plenty of snaps but has never lived up to his star rating. He has definitely improved though and last year was probably our #2 OL, started at LT last year, but has shifted over. We also have a transfer from Bama R-Jr Brandon Kennedy. rumor has it he was in line to get time on Bama's line at center. considering center was a big question he should be a good upgrade for us. Guards we don't have the names here, but we have plenty of options and can hopefully find some good guys here. We have been injured here as well so there is a lot of potential and guys with game time, even if they didn't show out. This probably the area where the biggest step up will happen just due to coaching, at least on offense.
TE-again some potential, some returners, some new guys, and a new scheme. Returner and likely starter is R-Jr ex walk on Eli Wolf (brother of now NFL TE Ethan Wolf). He had to put on a lot of mass to be able to block in this new scheme but has good hands and decent speed. he has played for us so has some experience if not as a starter. he was the most improved offensive player in the spring so hopes are high here. Dominick Wood Anderson was the top Juco TE IIRC last year so hopefully he is a good one, plenty of potential. more of a big bodied guy our coaches should love. claims this is just a stop on the way to the NFL, he is probably our number two, but could slide into the starting posistion. We have some other guys who will be doing the TE/Hback/Fullback game, which is a new position for the team but again the potential is there.
RB- Has been the most consistent part of the offense under the last coach and the talent is there. Ty Chandler was the back up to an NFL back and flashed. returned his first kick back for a TD. more of a speed guy he has had to bulk up for the new coach. Jordan is likely number two, a lower rated guy but flashed some serious potential last year, most fans are happy to see him play if that means anything to you. Got a new big Freshman in Banks who will likely play as well as a grad transfer in Madre London from Michigan State who is the big body our coaches want.
WR- probably the second biggest gap, behind OL, in talent potential and actual results. I have read some people say here that our WRs are as good as yours, they aren't. at least right now. I still wouldn't trade our guys for too many other teams, but they have had drops in practice, yes just practice. Jennings is the "old man" in the group who is a big play waiting to happen, big guy with some speed. Callaway will sometimes catch things he shouldn't and take the top off your team, and other times will leave you scratching your head. Brandon Johnson, is our "possession receiver" and Josh Palmer is another returner. Apparently the freshman Cedric Tillman has flashed. we don't have a really small speedy guy like most teams, but we have some guys with speed. crazy potential here, not a whole lot of consistent results.
Overall the offense should be steady if not flashy like yours. new coach, question marks everywhere. but potential. you are likely to see the more standard SEC offense out of us now.
DL- another place of potential, but with the scheme switch it will be interesting to see how guys turn out. Shy Tuttle is projected at NT, Alexis Johnson DT, and Kyle Phillips is DE. Thats two 5 stars and a 4. plenty of talent behind them as well, but scheme will determine a lot. Phillips is probably our most consistent guy, Tuttle was a great Freshman DT before a UGA player cheap shot set him back with a major injury. Definite NFL potential there, lets hope they are coached up.
LB- this is our star studded group, injuries again have required us to play a bunch of people in the past so plenty of experience there, but again new scheme. Daniel Bitulli, Darrin Kirkland Jr, Darrell Taylor, Quart'e Sapp, and Jonathan Kongbo are all names that if started probably wouldn't draw complaints from the fans. There are a number of younger guys behind them who should be interesting to watch. A few of the guys above will be in the NFL, Bitulli is probably the best, and made loads of tackles for us last year. Kirkland is smart and a good player but injury prone. Sapp is fast and moves well at OLB. Taylor and Kongbo are converted DEs to OLB/pass rushers. Taylor was good at making plays and Kongbo is about as athletic as they come.
CBs- lets not talk about last year. We have two freshman players recruited at WR who are at least in the conversation for starting/major playing time at CB. there are a bunch of four stars in this position but coaching really hampered them, as well as not turning their heads to find the ball. good athletes around, keeping up wasn't our problem, making plays was. Alontae Taylor and Bryce Thompson are the freshman. Shamburger, Marquill Osborne, Baylen Buchanan, and Labruzza are some other names to pay attention to. some of these guys may be nickel guys as well.
S- second best position group on the D, imo. Nigel Warrior is a junior with ideas of going pro early and may be our best defensive player. Micah Abernathy, and Tod Kelly Jr have played a bunch for us, but parts of our fans don't like to see them out there, but I consider them solid college players. Trevon Flowers is a freshman whose name has come up a lot. Theo Jackson showed some potential last year and seems athletic enough to play CB.
Defense should improve as the year goes on, but may be rough starting out. should end with a decent defense and proven players to set up a great 2019.
Special teams??? I haven't heard much about this posistion group in camp this year. Years past it was always a strong suit. two all american kick returners one year, several punters/kickers in the NFL. Not sure if that trend will continue. Brent Cimaglia is our place kicker and is solid, punter may be a freshman but was one of the best as a recruit. Returners was also a bit by committee last year. Callaway and Chandler were our guys last year who showed tons of flash, but with increased roles, and likely starts, at other positions (WR/RB) we may be looking for answers here.
As I said at the beginning if this game was at the end of the year I might feel differently and give the Vols a solid chance to win, but first game with new coaches and facing a great offense is probably too much to start the year. Prediction WVU 37 - Vols 24 *ducks thrown cat*
anyway just my two cents and felt like typing a monologue for people to tl;dr.
That might have been McBride. He was a true Freshman. smaller guy, that as you says flashes some potential. most people think with the turn to a prostyle offense he will transfer out. Thanks for the write up, man.
I watched the Missouri game from last year and the QB that started wasn't good, but he showed some potential. What happened to him?
Interesting article from March regarding lack of depth in WVU defense. 14 players transferred from WVU to other schools. The 3-3-5 defense requires depth to run successfully, and while the majority of transfers were 2nd or 3rd string, they need to be able to rotate players, stating “Eight of the fourteen transfers are defensive backs or defensive linemen. That is extremely detrimental to the Mountaineers because those are two locations where depth is absolutely necessary.
In Tony Gibson’s 3-3-5 defense, 3 defensive lineman simply cannot be asked to play 80 snaps a game for 12 weeks. The team has to be able to rotate players in to keep those big guys healthy and fresh. The same is true for the five defensive backs, who at times can be running over 2-3 miles per game with the amount of passing the other team does.” The article can be found here.
Why?Because you think WV is that much better than UT or what?Of the defensive players that transferred, only 4 would have played this year. Jordan Adams, Adam Shuller, Lamont McDougle, and maaaaaybe Kevin Williams. Adams came back. Shuller and McDougle are big losses for depth, but they were supposed team cancers. Kevin Williams was a complete unknown, though I was excited about him when we first recruited him. He had a great cut up.
Our depth is an issue, but it's always been an issue. We won 10 games and had a top 60 D with less depth than we have right now. It's worrisome, but I don't think it's gonna be an issue vs Tennessee.

I think this is a bad matchup for Tennessee. WVU is full of talented veterans. Tennessee is playing new schemes on both sides of the ball. A QB in the second year running Dana's offense usually sees a huge uptick on production.
I really think this is the most talent WVU has had in the history of the program.
I would be more concerned if this were game #5 than game #1 because WVU will never have the depth of an SEC team.
Given what WVU has on offense, given that the defense is finally healthy and for the first time in the history of the program has 8 DL who can play... I see WVU winning by more than 10.
WVU has a habit of getting up big and going to sleep. That's both natural but it shows the drop off in talent between WVU's first and second teams.
Who wrote this? It is as bias as anything I have read in a long time. Their defense has been and is one of the worst in the nation. At all positions just about they are awful. The DL from USC was retired and is a cripple. The Clemson DL is the only guy they have with a heartbeat. Everyone else is likely awful no reason to over think it. This may be the worst defense we play all year including Charlotte. They were dead last in rankings last year in their conference. Something like 109 out of 129 in the nation. They don't have good safeties. They don't have good football players on D period.
Their offense is good but somewhat overrated. 4th in conference last year. It is the Grier show. He runs around making plays while Dana drinks from a keg on the sideline. Dana drinks with media members and has thus one many over creating this year's hype. They are a 6-6 type of team in the Big 12.
Buried. Barring lots of injuries, he's unlikely to ever start for UT again. He's probably already been passed by the Fr Shrout who was an under the radar guy said to have NFL arm potential when he signed with UT. Pruitt keeps alluding to him as having possibly the best arm on the team. Thanks for the write up, man.
