West Virginia OC Jake Spavital: 'You can see Pruitt is going to turn that program around'

Yeah, these words don't mean a lot.

But the facts behind them do. In the first half, WVU had 5 offensive series. We forced them to punt twice, and made them settle for field goals twice. Gave up a single touchdown. Meanwhile, after an ugly start by our OLine, our offense got it together and controlled the game and the clock, to the tune of 21 minutes vs 9 minutes.

Fact is, we played very capable defense in the first half (and capable offense in the 2nd quarter).

That is what this coordinator saw. That's what he was talking about.

So interpret his words as platitudes of one coach for another, sure. But there's still something behind the words.

[we lost self-confidence and focus in the 2nd half and let the game get away from us; but that's a different subject]

And that's with the 1st quarter as ugly as it was for us offensively.

We're all set when the NCAA moves from a 60 minute game to a 30 minute game, then.

Heh.

Yeah, it's easy to be angry and frustrated and disappointed. I get it.

But the season isn't over, McDad. It really isn't.

Lack of discipline and self-confidence are coachable. Let's see what CJP and crew can do about it. Next significant test: Florida.

You keep reminding me that as if I said it is over. The season has just started. Our chances of it being respectable is over.

“If they keep playing complimentary football, it’s going to be a tough team to beat because they minimized our possessions at the beginning. Once that happens, they can run away with a lot of games.”

West Virginia OC Jake Spavital: 'You can see Pruitt is going to turn that program around'

Fair to say Spavital was just being gracious and overly magnanimous in victory. Not saying Pruitt won’t eventually turn it around, but there was absolutely nothing we saw yesterday from the Vols that suggested that he’s actiakkg gonna do it. That was a awful, borderline feckless performance by the Vols yesterday. IF JP can recruit at an extremely high level the next 2 years, then perhaps we can see a turn in 2020 or 2021....but he ain’t winning anything with the roster as its currently constituted, no chance.

With the current roster were headed no where but down. As in previous years evaluate each Assistant on the entire season and the personnel he had available. Right now easy to say the DL and OL are not SEC quality the secondary at corners are just young players with no experience. The touted linebacker crew is way overrated. I do like where JG is he has truly become a lot better. I also like the WR positions and Jordan is an SEC quality running back. That is all a lot of work to be done on the recruiting trail.

I propose a name change from Volunteers to Rebuilders.

It was mostly platitudes with very little behind them to suggest any substance. Tennessee played a decent second quarter but was completely dominated, out-physicaled, manhandled and thoroughly outplayed for 3 of the 4 quarters. Spavital was being “nice”, which is easy to do and, quite honestly, rings hollow after you’ve thoroughly beaten the hell out of a badly overmatched opponent. It is what it is.

5 opponent offensive possessions: 2 punts, 2 FGs, 1 TD. Just 9 minutes time of possession in a 30-minute half.

It is what it is, indeed. The first half wasn't our enemy.

I said last night, at halftime, that if the 3rd and 4th quarters were like the 2nd, we'd win the game. And we would have.

He was probably being nice, sure. But he had rational thought behind the kind words. Which is more than the heaviest of our mouth-breathers have behind their words this morning.

yep. there was reason to hope at the half. that 1st possession of the 3rd quarter was gonna be huge, and unofrutnatley it was not what we needed to happen.

but i agree. after the middle of the 1st qtr on to the half, you could see it.

just need more of it.

To open that game with that 1st play that nearly gets our QB killed says it all. They didn't look prepared. I know there's a lot to fix and maybe JP will get it fixed (I sure hope so). But that was a pretty unwatchable game.
