I hate to think about it but we are stuck with this coach. We fired our way into this situation. I don't think we're going to be able to hire our way out of it now. What coach that has a proven track record is going to dream of coming to Tennessee right now? At most we could replace our coach with another unproven coach and be right where we are next year. Throwing around flashy splashy new hire names isn't going to get us anywhere. It pains me to say but I think we're going to have to let Pruitt estate at least two to three more years. I think this for two reasons. We need to show respectable coaches that were willing to stick with a coach through some rough times while he build the program. Second, we need to take away any excuses from Pruitt before he gets fired. He needs the opportunity to have every player on the field be someone he recruited. No excuses. Your players. Your system. Your culture. If it doesn't fly, then you're gone. Gag and vomit.

If they wanted to fire and rehire they could get a name coach. They're interested in money and that's about it. Pay them enough and they'd come. I don't think they should do that right now and i don't think they will. This narrative that Tennessee couldn't get a proven coach is false. Fulmer did what Fulmer does, he hired conservative just like he coached. Mike Leach was never going to walk the sidelines under Fulmer. Doubt anyone else like him would either. He's going to find a guy in his mold as long as he's here. Pruitt is his guy, for now.

It wasn't the firings that set UT back, it was the hirings. Choosing Kiffin over Cutcliffe was insane. Choosing Dooley, even though I understand why he was hired, was throwing away several seasons, and as much sense and Jones made, he could not translate mid major success into SEC success. Pruitt was a complete hail mary. He may turn it around and become a good HC but there were multiple competent head coaches available that could have stabilized the ship.

Except Tennessee has zero leverage in attracting top coaches if we were to fire Pruitt in 2 seasons or less.

Because he is what happens:

New coach after Pruitt demands highest buyout terms in the country or says no to Tennessee.
New coach after Pruitt demands top 5 salary in the country or says no to Tennessee.
New coach after Pruitt demands 6 year minimum contract length or says no to Tennessee.

Tennessee would be in no position to offer those three things given what would be on the books in buyouts of Pruitt and his staff on top of Butch's.... That also doesn't add in what the new coach's buyout would be at current school plus buyouts of assistants at current jobs.

Surely to God if we’re going to talk about ‘proven’ coaches, we can aim higher than Mike Leach.

The culture has to change or winning will not happen on a consistent basis. It will take some time to exorcise the losing culture. It may take a couple more classes, it make only take a couple big wins. But if we don't get past the "give up because something went wrong" attitude it doesn't really matter who the coach is. Maybe we need to be playing the younger guys who haven't become assimilated into it yet.

Meh, there are plenty of capable guys that would jump at 5 yrs guaranteed at 6 mil per yr which would put him in the middle of the big 6 SEC salary structures.

I think Pruitt gets one more yr to show progress but buyout money or refusing to pull the plug in 2 yrs won't be the main reason why he remains. The only way I see Pruitt getting fired this yr is if it's a 2 win or less season and attendance and donations tank.

This all isn't on Fulmer, he only hired one. The previous 3 times we couldn't get a big name either. There's no track record of us going after a big name, only taking chances with up and comers, and hoping it works.

Revisionist history at it's finest. No way was it insane to hire Kiffin over Cut. Hindsight makes one wonder but at the time, we had a young and up and coming coach who was bringing with him one of the greatest defensive minds in the NFL--Monte Kiffin. Cut had been let go at Ole Miss and some felt his success was due to Eli. In any event, as much as I like Cut, no guarantee he would win championships at UT.

Bottom line--you can't wait to see how things ended up before deciding whether an hire was a good one at that time.

No one is putting it on Fulmer. Just saying we're as likely to make a splash hire with him as AD, as is the likelihood we beat Alabama anytime soon. Ain't happening

I do agree he has his mind on what type of coach he wants, and won't be swayed.

I would say we hired our way into this problem.
Bad coaching hires after letting Fulmer go led to where we are now.
I think Pruitt needs and will get more time to try to turn things around.
I’m not convinced he’s a bad hire.
If we had just average QB play we’d be 3-1 right now at worst
