We're Still On Track To Achieve Our Season Goal

Still complaining about the style points! Like you do all the time!

The only recorded stats are W-L, Conf/Div Champ, and Bowl game appearance.

They might be the only thing that matter in the history books, but "style points" are certainly indicative of how well coached a team is. The fact we've only played one complete game, against freakin' Tennessee Tech, is telling.

Call it style points if you want, but our potential this year was a lot higher than how we performed. Most of it is directly on coaching. Most people aren't complaining about style points. They are complaining about bad coaching. Simple as that.

No it wasn't

If you think we ever had a shot of winning the SEC with what Bama has, you are delusional. Over half their defense will be playing in the NFL soon.

We aren't there yet. Nobody else is either. Winning the east is as good as it will get this year. Some people seem to think NOT going to Atlanta is better. I don't get that.

I was disagreeing with chatt town who said "Our potential this year was far above "just win the East".

I think SEC East was the goal and hopes of going farther. He said far above which was not the case so jump on Chatt town not me.

Lol now you are just twisting the perception of the team to make it seem like they are underperforming.

App State, Ohio, 39 point loss to Bama, loss to SCar and hoping Florida will lose again so that we can get to the SECCG. As Joey Kent said yesterday on the 104.5 pregame show, "this is a disappointing season no matter what happens going forward".

I'll certainly be a happier fan and it'll be a much more successful season if we get to Atlanta. I'll take that over the alternative for sure. But nobody can honestly say this team hasn't constantly underachieved this season based on preseason expectations.

Winning the east is like hanging final 4 banners it just means you weren't good enough

You have to crawl before you can walk. Winning the East and getting to Atlanta was the goal this year from the very beginning and that was before the rash of injuries. If we still make it there despite the injuries, this season is a success. If you cant take pleasure in that then you are a joyless drone.

Our potential this year was far above "just win the East"

Since we are back to "hoping" to win out, it would be great to win the East but no matter who we play in the SEC CG we will get killed unless a miracle happens. Still, with all of the key injuries we have sustained it would be nice to actually win the East. We can't sleep on any of our remaining games or we all are going to be upset. There's no way we should have been sleep-walking the first half of the season in the first halves of those games.

Nope, we are where we are because we pulled a Tennessee and pissed the bed rather than take care of business against a terrible SC team.

Yes, and let's not forget the "Hail Mary" miracle. No way we deserved to win that game hoping for a Hail Mary play. By the same token we should have won the A&M game but you can't have 7 turnovers and expect to win against anyone.

When SC beats FL this week, can we quit calling them a bad team? This kid at QB is making them a much better team.

I do think there's a good possibility that USCe could do it; they're playing pretty good now. That would help alot because we know LSU is going to whomp UF.

The only thing that we have fell short with as far as expectation is the USC loss.

I disagree. As far as Ws & Ls, yes. But our expectations is that we would have a relatively consistent team that would dominate most games and be competitive against Bama, UF, UGA, & A&M; most thought a 2-2 split there was likely. However, no one could predict the injuries, still, this team has been very inconsistent. Hopefully, they have glued themselves back together and basically this new team will perform better than before; can't really make a valid judgement after playing TN Tech but at least some of these other guys got some valuable playing time.

Every Tennessee football game is special to me. And to a lot of you, too, I know. They come so rarely.

Only 12 or 13 times each year (what's 13 divided by 365?) we get to see our lads take the field. Add one game to that by going to Atlanta? Oh heck yeah! Worth gold, that extra game. I don't care who it is on the other side of the field: Bama, ,LSU, Auburn, doesn't matter to me. If we play to our potential, we can have a good game against anybody. And, even if it's Bama, we might just squeak out a win.

And a win in Atlanta is a championship.

So yeah, I'm with OP...there are still a lot of interesting things that could happen for Team 120 in our remaining 4 to 5 games, and some of those possibilities are very good indeed.

Go Vols!

p.s. The predominance of VolNation thought 10-2 regular season and a trip to Atlanta was the definition of a successful 2016. We know that, because there was a poll asking that very question, and a LOT of us responded. So the loss to USCe brings us one game short of the 10-2 part. *shrug* Those who would say we are falling 'far short' of our collective hopes and dreams are engaging in hyperbole. It was one bad game. With a lot still to look forward to.

Context matters. The east is just horrible, and we are backing into winning it with recruiting completley collapsing.

Butch has proven that he needs top 10 level recruits to be borderline competitive.

The goal was to get to Atlanta and have shot at a playoff spot

Not for the majority of VolNation.

Because you don't get to the playoffs with a 10-2 record, and that (with a trip to Atlanta) was our collective definition of "success" before the season started.

Of course, the goals for our team are many and varied. Some of them for 2016 probably included:
  • Play in and win the most-attended football game in history (check).
  • Defend Neyland Stadium, 7-0 there (missed that because of the Bama game, but might still go 6-1 at home).
  • Break the Florida streak (check).
  • Break the Bama streak (missed that one).
  • Win the East and get to Atlanta (still possible).
  • Win the SEC (still possible, even if an outside shot).
  • Get to the playoffs (no longer possible).
  • Win the NC (no longer possible).
So there are team goals we've achieved, goals still in play, and some goals that are now beyond our reach.

For a program like ours, there's never just one season goal.

Go Vols!

Top 5 with the talent and experience we had returning was absolutely legit. Everything was set up. Basically the reason we weren't wanting more was the simple fact of Alabama.

And honestly, the reason for the lower expectations than the talent and experience dictated was exactly because of Butch. In our hearts we know what we've got, even if we refuse to be righteously indignant about it.

Not at all true.

I know you're speaking for yourself, but you're sure not speaking for me, or I suspect a lot of other folks.

So stick to your own heart, brother. :eek:k:
