We're only 2 years away...

I'd even go as far to say that we will be pretty good next year. We just won't have the depth to prove it.

P.S. We have the same avatar.

I didn't notice the avatar until you posted that. :good!: I hope we are good next year. I'm just tired of seeing everyone so divided on here but at the same time respect where all is coming from.

MOST of the time, the best football players have 4 or 5 stars beside their name, and/or are being recruited by heavyweight schools. There r exceptions both ways, but for the most part, u can't win CONSISTENTLY in the sec having the 30th ranked recruiting class every year. See- uk, vandy.. but I believe the staff will get their guys. Might take a yr or two or three to beat out big schools for the ones they REALLY want though

Let's put it this way. Judging from history, the recruiting services miss several times more "real" 4-5*" talent than they find. If you take the NFL draft as the ultimate score card for their accuracy then they miss alot of great prospects.

There are enough underrated 3* players in any given class to make several teams that are actually equivalent to the #1 class in real talent.

Again, the key is finding those guys like Greg King who is better than Askew while avoiding the 3* guys like Brimfield who were actually 0*.

its like the year the Expos were way out in first place and then baseball went on strike... we'll be prepping for the BCS title game and then boom.. December 2012 rolls around and the world ends.

I guess as long as we are ranked #1 because we just put a major beatdown on Bama in the SECCG. Then I won't mind.

I'd also like us to take that system and find the good 4 and 5 star guys as well though. I think Dooley will find good players though.

Tennessee is my favorite SEC team (which isn't saying a lot, I guess, but I do like Tennessee a lot) and I would be very pleased to see them return to prominence. I think too much stock is put in recruit ratings these days and so schools get caught in the trap of going outside the lines a bit in order to secure the best ones, Tennessee being a guilty one here. All of the recruiting risks are made irrelevant by the fact that there isn't an cohesive coaching system in place. Anyway, this is my first post here. Always considered joining, but I caved into the pressure of the college football season and like to see how other fans are doing and spread the good will.

i don't thinks so...much longer...we just don't have the personnel nor the recruits incoming that would cause us to be "back", jmo.

from seeing a decent Tennessee football team, imo. It sucks to keep waiting and waiting but things happen and we have to continue to be patient.

It's not that much longer, really, the day will come.

We'll be decent before the season is over. There are some guys on this team who can play, but they weren't ready to be thrown in against a top-five team in their first real game (UT-Martin doesn't count).

We're two years away from being able to contend for the SEC title, but we're not far at all from decent. How fast we get there depends on the coaches.

I agree if we can maintain the roster. attrition attacks every class. very few classes on any team don't start losing players after the first year. I suspect we will lose a couple from this freshman class before next season. All depends on who you lose and can you afford to lose them.

Why it takes a while to get back to being competitive.

I agree that there r plenty of "real 4-5*"'s missed in each class..but u can't expect to find a ton of those in ones schools recruiting class. Look at NC teams..its not coincidence their classes r rated so high before a great season.

Thanks, I'll keep trying. I probably have 5600 crappy posts and plenty of bad threads along the way but I'll get there at some point.
you said 2 years....what if it's 1 or 3 or 4?

This year is 2 games old and we're already seeing threads about when we will be a 'good' team. Pointless.

Okay, bad choice or words. I think Tennessee could be an exciting team to watch in 2 years.

I think they're exciting now... for one half anyway. Who can honestly say they weren't excited watching UT play the first 2 1/2 quarters on Saturday? In comparison to college football as a whole - we have a decent team now. 2 years from now?? maybe dominant.. who knows.

I just think it's way to early to be predicting how the next 2 years are going to go when we've just started the current season. The way we played to start the game saturday shows that we're no Vandy by any means. Let's relax a bit and give this team some time to gel, and grow and then let's talk future of UT football.

I guarentee you that if we beat Florida on Saturday half the people here change their "end of world" outlook to a far more optimistic one.

UT will be better next year IMO. I like WR with RogersX2, Milton, Hunter, then whoever they add (hopefully Arnett). I like the RB's who all return plus Smith and possibly Buie.

I like the OL who will return everyone except Shaw and will hopefully add even more help. I'm even more encouraged by the OL because of what Wylie did with them in only 7 months. What will he do with a full cycle?

I like DE. Williams and Walker will be losses but Bohannon, Jackson, Smith, Miller (if he isn't a DT), plus the '11 additions will be a great group. LB is the biggest hit with losing Frazier, Reviez, and Thompson but there's really good young talent there too.

Wolf is the only senior listed in the secondary.

All three QB's are back plus whoever they pick up.

TE is a concern primarily because of numbers. I think Rivera can be very good. Hopefully Powers will be able to contribute alot and early.

They may invest in blood this year but should get high returns next year.

Kicking is set for 3 or 4 years.

You left out Ben Martin on the DE list.

Well said it once and I will say it again. IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE IT CLICKS. What you see right now is Dooley cleaning up the mess. I can promise you Tennessee will Find there heart, They will find the pride that made this one of the biggest football programs in the country and they will over come. Tennessee lost there heart and pride a few years ago. It begin in 2001 with LSU and over the last nine years all the close losses have had has just added up. Give Dooley time it will happen. When it does descent will not be heard and those 4 and 5 star well like in 2002 when Fulmer signed 6 5 star and about 20 4 star those days will return.

We will field a mediocre team until we get a competent qb, becuase Simms is not that. Hopefully Bray will step up and be ready to take over next season.

It isn't coincidence that those playing for NC's are so often coming from Florida, Texas, Louisianna, Ohio, and California either. Bama is the exception but they have good instate talent as well and can draw from surrounding states.

The points are A) the recruiting svcs miss alot of talent in part because they focus on the higher level HSFB states like those above and B) if you want to win outside of those states on any kind of consistent basis... you better figure out how to find those 3* gems on a consistent basis. You will NEVER compete with the instate schools for the best talent in their homestate.

If Fulmer's last few years proves anything it is that the "leftover" 4* and 5* players that UT was getting were passed over by the instate schools for good reason.

With a user name like that, you are ill qualified to declare any QB incompetent.

I really love the the hope for the future on this board, but we are letting it blind us. This team is very talented! The secondary is the best in the SEC

I think we will be 'decent' by mid-season if we don't have any more injuries. We have such a lack of experience right now. Next year once we fill a few more holes we will be very good.
