We're becoming a Nike school in 2015

sure they get money but if there was a huge difference in quality would they take more money and be at a disadvantage while on the field? I just don't see a player using inferior equipment when at the highest level of competition

Sure isn't hurting CP. And Nike isn't inferior equipment to Adidas. So far from players I've heard they like the Nike equipment better. Sure, Adidas may have some better equipment in some places, but from the football students I have taught here at UT they say that the Nike equipment has a nicer feel to it and is overall better than the Adidas they have. They said they weren't slighting Adidas though.

The throwing aside, it will be HUGE for the kickers. Those balls now are like bricks. I am anticipating seeing much better field goal and kick-off execution in '15.

The Air Lock ball sounds like a cannon off my kids foot.

CP is an example of what I'm saying. If he could gain an advantage wearing Nike do you think he would stick with Puma? Fit could be a factor as not all shoes/shirts/etc fit everyone the same way. But I would call that a preference that has nothing to do with quality

I guess I'm more concerned with what Nike has offered UT that they didn't in the past. Guess we'll see

Whether we believe it or not it is minimal. Cleats are cleats. There is a difference but again it's minimal. We haven't lost any games because of Adidas nor could I see any player in his right mind complaining about equipment issues, especially when they've got the best there is to offer.

so they don't care about quality? I doubt a player knowingly steps onto an NFL field in inferior equipment. Tells me the only difference between the brands is the money they offer

Of course it isn't, but it can be the deciding factor. Why did CP sign with Puma? He thinks Puma makes better gear than Nike? Doubtful.

This is about brand perception/status, not quality of product, which is fine too.

Agreed. Nike does a much better job with this than ADIDAS. Also kids seem to like Nike more, probably due to branding. That can only mean good things for us.

Bottom line kids love Nike and the name. Argue all you want about the little things but this is a positive in the direction of drawing kids here. May not be huge but its a positive.

The #1 QB in the nation next year seems pretty stoked that Tennessee is going to Nike.

Oh wait, recruits don't care about equipment manufacturers. Nevermind.

As an avid golfer, Ive hated Adidas polos. They look like the Starter jackets from 92. Horrible patterns. I loath their golf gear as well. Just looks bulky. This is a good move IMO.

Yeah, I see your argument. And honestly I would try to wear the equipment that would give me the best results also, but I'm pretty sure the equipment that the athletes get are better than what the general public gets. We also have no idea if Nike offered CP. If I were Nike I would have offered him asap and gotten his sig. That kid is lightening in a bottle. If Puma was the only one giving him an offer, or the best offer, I understand him taking it. Dolla dolla bills y'all.

But like what Oddfuture said, if Nike is what the players want then they should get it. It shouldn't be about the fans, it should be about the players.

As for concerned about what Nike will do I am sorta in that boat as well. My biggest concern is I do not want to see those Smokey Grey unis be forgotten about.

Lots of nice input from you... This issue seems very personal to you. Is there a reason?

not personal I just have a differing opinion. That's still allowed right?

Adidas was a sponsor who took care of UT while Nike has shown in the past that we weren't necessarily that important. Hopefully that has changed since we made the switch

I get the player angle but honestly I'm more concerned about the health and well-being of the UTAD. Giving up millions of dollars and control over our brand doesn't seem smart. I guess we'll see

The Most Popular Cleats of the 2013 NFL Pre-Season | Sneaker Report

5 of the top 10 were nike, 2 for Jordan, 1 each, Reebok, Adidas, UA.

Most of Adidas cleat R&D goes into soccer cleats, then it will trickle down to their other cleats. Football cleats are the focus for Nike's cleat production, followed closely by baseball cleats. I have always thought Nike's football cleats were light years ahead of Adidas' in terms of comfort. Style an appearance is just in the eye of the beholder across the board.

Son has been a soccer player since he could walk. Tried every brand out there. Liked Puma better than adidas but for the last 8 years has been wearing Nike. Loves the tiempo and vapors.

Also kicks for the football team and says the Nike balls are much easier to kick. Says there is about a 10 yard difference between them and others.

Honestly, people are making a big deal over a uniform, when it's really not even a big deal. And nothing people say will change it

It is a concern, but im sure Hart, Butch and all the other coaches would not allow the UT brand to be made fun of in any way. Any news on when the info will be made public?

I don't have any sources on this, but I'm pretty positive that players who endorse do so because they got thrown a ton of money. Heck, if Russell gave me a few million just to wear their stuff for 5 minutes in front of cameras while I answer questions then I'm taking that.

I don't think it's just 5 mins in front of camera, they actually have to wear it in games as well. Couple of people who are sponsored by Addidas, Derek Rose, Tim Duncan and Eric Berry.
