Yeah, Barnes is such a terrible human for taking a salary that is totally market-driven. I don’t know of any other NCAA coaches in any sport who would accept a raise in any similar situation. I’m sure you can’t think of any, either.

There's no need to be dramatic. Nobody said he was a terrible human being. Does he overestimate his worth? Definitely, but that's a two-sided issue with him and the AD.

He did use an opportunity to swindle a raise from a university and program that gave him a chance after Texas canned him, that had gone through a lot themselves in recent years, and had given him all the support in the world from the administration and the fan base. Nobody is blaming him for positioning for a raise, but he is now the 4th highest paid coach in the country after that stunt. To whom much is given, much is expected.

You go to schools that give you the best chance to win, period.

I’m guessing UCLA thought Barnes was a good enough coach to win there but you want to b*tch about paying too much for a 700 win coach at a football school?

Makes no sense.

So you want to cherry-pick another game of choice to deride a player to support your position. There were periods tonite whe Fulky, Santi and others were placed on the bench by the officials and this sophmore held it together more than most. I was proud most tonite that unlike other games where they got hit in the mouth, they held on and fought back. The growth of the freshmen showed and I know more pains are out there with them but the whole team stepped up. When overplayed out top they all drove to the hole instead of expecting the next guy to do it after a forced pass. We shall see if they back up or not.

Can you tell me my position? Can you tell me which game I cherry picked? If I recall correctly, I made a criticism of the play in the Ole Miss game. Criticism well deserved. You then bring up play in the Kentucky game as though that was anywhere relevant to my point. Typical grampa poster, sitting at the kitchen table all day, hitting up vn. This salary debate is one that people are making in a vacuum. Except for Beard, maybe Wright, and Barnes, the rest of the top paid coaches are at blue blood programs. While having good tradition, UT basketball is not a blue blood. Sometimes, in order to keep or attract talent, an organization that is not a market-leader has to offer more of an incentive (or pay). In addition, it's market driven as the UCLA job opened up. UCLA's reputation has gone down, so they learned, too, that they had to pay higher for a coach that isn't considered a top 10 coach.

We had to pay a premium to keep Barnes, and I don't understand how people lose sight of this. He has been successful here, he was in demand, and we paid. What was the alternative? Let him go, hire a mid-major coach at $2 million per year and hope that it works out. That strategy has only worked once out of about 4 attempts the last 20 years at UT. You pay the premium because you know what he brings, and the increase pays for itself with continued interest and success. People want to go back to being "worth it." Maybe not to you as a fan, but yes, to the university Rick Barnes is worth it. This concept seems difficult for people. These same people would be complaining when a new mid major coach was leading us to .500 seasons without 5 star talent.

Actually, now that we have hindsight with the era of Phillip Fulmer as AD, I believe the speculation at the time of Barnes' courtship with UCLA is probably correct. Barnes was able to turn it into a raise for himself, but one of the things that Barnes was supposedly frustrated with was the lack of commitment to basketball. His assistants needed more money, and there needed to be more of a focus to help UT basketball succeed. Now that we are hearing the Fulmer stories, I have no doubt that he was slacking in helping basketball.

There is so much more behind the scenes that fans just don't know about. A $2 million bump is nothing compared to the return a school can get on continued success in a major sport.
