Well, Petrino just fired the entire Arkansas def staff

That's not smart if that's the reasoning.
If a bunch of their defense transfers out, it won't matter what they install before spring practice.

Then again, it's great when our SEC opponents do dumb stuff.
I see it the other way around if Bobby can actually assemble a decent defensive staff. The way things were going, it was highly likely whoever could transfer out at the end of a tumultuous season would. If the kids like what they see with the new defensive staff, who knows? Maybe not, but they are definitely gone otherwise if they are going to be gone.

For some reason, I’ve never really followed his story. Did a little research this evening…

WOW, what a complete douche canoe. How does anyone even play for this guy?

You know, the world has changed in the last 20 years. Kids are different these days. They are not going to respond to this creep. That program is done for.

I hope coach Heupel puts up 70 points on them in two weeks.
In case anyone has a very short memory, Arkansas hired Calipari away from Kentucky. They are looking for creeps.

Poor decision? Petrino put them in a position where any organization would have to terminate a manager. They had no choice. The one who made the poor decision was Bobby Petrino. A whole series of them that affected a lot of people, including his wife and family. The "off the field stuff" you're referring to was program-damaging unethical conduct.
I’m glad you understand exactly why Petrino’s past actions were such a problem. I remember a thread discussing the firing of Petrino a while back and several of us, myself included, laid out exactly why Petrino had to be fired. Infidelity in of itself isn’t the issue. Hiring your mistress to a job over which you have direct authority in a state institution is the problem. Any of us who have worked in the corporate world, government, or other professions where sexual harassment training is mandatory understand why the Petrino situation was such an issue.

I don’t think that bunch cares. But I do agree with you.

Also he wouldn’t scare me at all. The game has probably passed him by a bit.
Is he even that great of a coach? I'm completely baffled with any school's fascination with the guy. I'm also baffled at the Arkansas fan base's excitement like "woo-hoo he's BACK!!!" What in the world? Like Nick Saban had returned to the sidelines?

His record against top 25 teams since 2003 (louisville, arkansas, wku, louisville again, mo st (only 2 top25 games), and then arkansas again (as oc):)

16-42

That's a 28% win rate against top 25 teams. One of his better wins was last year against #4 TN.

The guy is a loser on the field. He is a loser off the field.

I have a list of coaches I root against and Petrino is now in the top three. I hope Heupel runs him out of Neyland so fast he needs that neck brace again. I also hope the defense gets their act together and shuts them down. I'm looking for a rout not a shoot out.

My comments and references were about Gruden. I wasn’t talking about Bobby P

Coach Heupel has already talked to the team and told them I am driving from New Jersey for my first trip to Tennessee. The team said there is no way Arkansas will win and they are laser focused on winning this game for me.
Thank you for your efforts at this important time.

This guy has like, 13 lives. Here are the highlights. Sadly comical.
  • 2001: After Petrino’s only season as the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator, he leaves to become the Auburn OC, allegedly without telling Jacksonville head coach Tom Coughlin, according to the New York Post’s Bart Hubbuch.
  • 2003: After one year at Auburn, Petrino becomes Louisville’s head coach. He then secretly interviews with Tigers boosters to potentially take the Auburn HC job from his still-employed former boss, Tommy Tuberville.
  • 2007: Six months after signing a 10-year Louisville contract and publicly telling teams to stop pursuing him (after having interviewed with several), Petrino leaves Louisville for the Atlanta Falcons.
  • Still 2007: Thirteen games into a lost season without Michael Vick, Petrino bolts for Arkansas, leaving behind a 78-word letter.
  • 2012: The main shenanigan. You know the one. David Ubben would later write the definitive story of Petrino’s Arkansas ending.
  • 2016: Petrino, already back at Louisville since 2014 (sure, why not), is not personally implicated in the “Wakeyleaks” scandal, denying all knowledge of Wake Forest’s playbook breach. I believe him!!
  • 2018: Helpless without Lamar Jackson. Fired by Louisville after a 2-8 start and a fifth blowout loss in a row.
  • 2023: After having gone a pretty good 18-15 as the head coach at then-FCS Missouri State, Petrino returns to the school he’d embarrassed 11 years prior by being caught theatrically lying about his relationship with his young subordinate. Leader of men!

Dabo was almost run out before he flipped the switch. Ole Miss took a big swing and once it was trending up, made an all out attempt to keep Kiffin by competing with other schools financially. Auburn is trending like Florida, but on a slower pace.

Arkansas had a winner and then fired Petrino for off the field stuff. They have paid for that poor decision with subsequent coaches.

Arkansas to me will fade into a Basketball school in this era.

The likes of Florida and Auburn are drifting into irrelevance while schools like Ole Miss and Vandy appear to be surging. The allure of the historical status of schools don't matter anymore.
Short term it is all about the coach. But there are floors and ceilings.

Great summary. Actually made me laugh reading it's so ridiculous.

How in the world does the Arkansas fan base get behind him? He has a historical 28% win rate against top 25 teams (16-42). The Volunteer fan base ran off Greg Schiano at the mere mention of him coming to Knoxville and his rap sheet was milquetoast compared to Bobby P.

I think there is a win-to-scandal ratio that some fan bases can look past. Think, Urban Meyer, Hugh Freeze. Bobby Petrino's ratio is up there so high, I don't understand the fan base's ability to justify.

I do wish he wouldn't have forgotten the part where he got Jimbo Fisher fired, but I'm not sure Jimbo has any hard feelings.
