In his Monday press conference, Pruitt regurgitated the “most improvement occurs between Week 1 and Week 2” narrative. Well, if that’s the case with this team, we are starring a 3-win season in the face.

The effort was vastly improved, but the execution and result was the same. We have a fourth year Junior QB who is getting worse, not better. We still can’t manage to line up properly in defense. And we have catastrophic defensive lapses that should have been learned by 8th grade.

The QB is - and has always been - garbage. Glad some of y’all have woken up to this fact. This isn’t a bowl team, so JG needs to have a seat. Period. It’s over. Nice guy, but an awful QB.

Ansley and Pruitt have to teach better. Period. The fact that we have two of the brightest defensive minds in all of football on our staff and we still can’t manage the basics is disturbing. Defense was not the main issue last night, but it was when it mattered, and that play should not and cannot happen. It just can’t.

But back to my main point. If that is the best improvement we can hope for, we will beat Charlotte and UAB, and maybe KY. The recruits will look elsewhere and the rebuild becomes impossible.

This team needs to get better in a hurry and this staff needs to put a QB on the field that at least gives us a chance to win. It can’t get much worst than this.

Well they did play a whole lot better.

Not like we can get a better QB, more defensive backs, linebackers, and defensive lineman from week 1 to week 2.

I’ve been saying since early last year that he isn’t the answer. At best he is average, not a game changer. More of a game manager and he really can’t do that either, partially because of the o-line and his lack of decision making and recognition of a defense. Slow to react.
He is tough as nails, but not a SEC QB.
Wasn’t he the number rated duel threat QB coming out of high school?
Butch deprogrammed him then left him with no QB coach. Thinking it may be too late for him now.

Agreed with all points. I think we can beat Vandy too. I was just saying in another thread that Pruitt needs to understand that that certain things just can’t happen also apply to coaches. We should have called a TO on that play that got away from us. Chaney also became much too vanilla. We could have thrown some outlet passes as opposed to handing the ball off over and over.

JG doesn’t necessarily need to sit, but I would like to see our other QBs get some early snaps and see what they can do. If they play well, keep them in. If they don’t, put JG back in. Anytime it is that obvious a QB is a weak link, something needs to change.

It’s a fair question, but I would proffer that he is 0-2 against inferior opponents and has a dreadful win/loss record over his career. As you said, he isn’t even an effective game manager and he isn’t athletic in the least. At least Mauer can extend plays with his athleticism and may bring a spark for this team to rally around. JG has had four years to figure it out and hasn’t. Time to move on. What do we have to lose? He isn’t leading us to bowl anyway.

Could chaney have become vanilla last night because no confidence in his QB? Not sure you listened to the game but even the announcers (Greg Mcelroy) mentioned they wouldn't put it in JG hands to win the game.

Good post. I thought the team played really well, actually. We just couldn't complete passes when we needed to. It was odd because BYU's secondary was supposed to be their weakness. Eric Gray is electric... I actually get excited to see him touch the ball. Chandler played much better. Line play was decent, which is promising because BYU has some big dudes. Defense was serviceable, but we're not going to win many defensive battles... we have to score points. We have to explore our other QB options, imo.

That's exactly what it is, we had to go to just running the ball because no one in the stadium in orange trusted him, he had time and still stunk up the joint, throwing into double and triple coverage and just flat out missing open receivers. I like JG as a person I've had many opportunities to talk with him and he really is a great guy but he just doesn't have what it takes

Some coaches are just stubborn, trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I much rather see mistakes by a freshman than incompetence by an RS Junior. Coaches need to realize that our current defense is not gonna win games and secure leads so we need to score points and lots. Right now JG doesn't have the it factor and far from being a baller.

Beginning to think, actually thought this all along, that JG’s football IQ is extremely low. Can’t read defense worth a dang, can’t see blitzes coming a mile away, slow to react to said blitzes, holds on to the ball way too long, has one receiver he targets and can’t process fast enough so he always checks down to the RB for a modest 2-3 yard gain.
The OC can’t put much in the play book because JG can’t process it.
Very clear to see now.
Agree what do we have to lose now, start the freshman for the future. JG got transfer portal mode, in coming QB (2020) redshirts and learns.

Unless something drastic happens Tennessee will NOT beat Kentucky. Tennessee will have their hands full with UAB......they are better than Georgia ST and prob BYU.
