The old saying is that the greatest improvement shown by a team is from the 1st game to the 2nd. Sometimes the first game is a crap shoot, here's some quick examples of how first week didn't really indicate what a team was really like

1) 1989 Vols hosted a Colorado State team that ended up w/o a winning record, hung on 17-14. The next week went out to UCLA and destroyed a top 5 team, went on to 11-1 season.

2) 2014 Ohio State struggled in first game with Navy, then got spanked at home by Va.Tech...you know how that season turned out.

3) 1998 Florida State got humiliated at home against NC State and looked like a dumpster fire, turned everything around and made a run to NC game.

We don't know what this season is going to look like, but Battle of Bristol will indicate more where this season is going than last night did. Put to bed, move on, we won, GBO.

Our 'O' is waaay to predictable. veteran VT DC Bud Foster will have his guys ready. If our 'O' line plays like it did vs. asu it's gonna be along day.

Mlook for more delayed hand offs

If you're an opposing OC against Shoop, you're going to execute some misdirection plays from time to time but you had better come with a suite of offense as he will beat you IMO. First 2015 Clemson gave up 10 points to Appy State and our 2016 Vols gave up 13, so we are not out of the ballpark defensively against a common team and a national title contender. Obviously some of our kids and the team overall did not play well. However there is cause for some comfort going forward for Vol fans rather than lined up for a suicide jump into the Tennessee river. I think had we retained Jancek you could chalk us up to a loss last night. I'm still very confident of what we have going on defensively, not patting any D player of ours on the back as they took plays off IMO, few had that high motor required every play, perhaps Barnett but that was it. Offensively we have work to do and feelings may get hurt, we had kids starting that should have been yanked due to poor performance. If CBJ and staff want to hang around on Rocky Top for a few more years, they fix that and our special teams issues fast. UT fans just will not support bad football and offensively we stunk the house up IMO.

I think VT is a better matchup for us than App State was to be honest. Yes, the type of athletes arent that big of a difference either. We have to remember App State's RPI was #46 while VT is even behind them.

If a game like last night don't get you ready for your next game then something bad is wrong & it would have to placed on the coaching staff. I blame UT not being ready to play last night on Butch & company. It's the 1st game of the season.

No excuses for not being ready. We were lucky to have luck but it hasn't been on our side in the past few years so you could say it's out turn. I really believe VT we matchup so much better against & will be ready to play them. I could see us taking some frustration out in Bristol next Saturday & beat VT by 20+ points.

Point spread for VT won't be much different than the App State game. I would say we're going to be a 17-20 point favorite unless the spread people didn't like what they saw last night & take us down a few notches in which we deserve for sure. Could go down to as low as 14 point favorite maybe.

Dobbs is not an adequate enough passer for the Vols to win the East. I was hoping for improvement. There are WR weapons that could be used if Dobbs was an adequate passer and he had legit pass protection.

The defensive line also looked bad last night.

App State is a good team, but they are not nearly as good as the teams we will face in the coming weeks.

I can see UT losing to:

Virginia Tech (Fuente will have them ready to play).
Florida
Georgia
Alabama
A&M

I clearly understand this observation from lastnights game.
