I was wondering about our linebackers this weekend. I know that over the past couple of years they have been a strong point on the D, and that we have consistently been worried about the D line (past couple of seasons). However, this year I am feeling as if our D line will be much improved (thin but improved). I am a little worried about our linebackers...anyone want to encourage a fellow Vol? And, do you see Askew being able to get legitimate time this year?

Rico McCoy has the potential to be a good player for us. It will be interesting to see who wins the other 2 spots in the fall.

Nick Reveiz, Jerod Askew, Herman Lathers, and LaMarcus Thompson should all be in the mix. I'm sure we will see Savion Frazier and Chris Donald (hopefully) get some PT as well.

I think it is all dependent upon how quickly the other guys and the younger guys learn the system they are running. I think we should be fine, that's a pretty solid group on paper.

I would think pressure from or Dline would be more of a concern than LB play. JMO

Hopefully you don't evaluate linebackers like you do QB's

I really believe in Jerod Askew. I know a freshman in the middle is a little scary but, I think the guy has the goods. Especially a tampa 2 middle backer.

I wouldn't be shocked if Rogan and/or Vinson don't make it to the fall given their circumstances. If both of them are gone, our secondary will be giving the LBs are run for their money in the weakness department. Berry can only do so much.

Tennessee always seems to have someone step up at linebacker. Who knew Ellix Wilson was going to be that good? We've moved L Little, A Wilson, and J Mayo to MLB their final season without having priorly played it and they were all dominant players. Point is, with the type of athletes we have the only way to make them look bad is weak play at D-Line.

LB is obviously the biggest weakness on the team--or tied with QB in that regards. McCoy is only decent--not sure he's better than that--and after that we are very thin and very inexperienced. Lathers apparently can run--but he's young and on the small side and hasn't played a game against SEC competition; Askew will be a true freshman. To think those two are going to help us shut down florida or georgia or bama may be very wishful thinking--especially because the meat of the UT schedule is always in the first half of the season. Reviez is strong and tough-minded and will give the Vols everything he has--just not sure how he'll measure up against SEC OL, either. I heard Monte discussing the LBs a couple of months ago and while he was polite, one could read between the lines and see that he wasn't exactly doing back flips over by our LB situation.

If we lose Rogan we better start worrying about our DB's...Berry can't be the only one back there.

I'm far more concerned of possible injuries to an already depleted OL than the LB situation...

Totally agree. The question mark for me is there's Rico and then there's unproven depth. When I look at the depth chart I don't see difference makers. That's because it's June and we don't have the chance to see them in action yet to prove me wrong.

But hopefully Monte's schemes will make up for any inexperience and talent issues by playing assignment football with good fundamentals and the LBs will be good enough for this year.
