It's their way to prepare for future disappointments. Even if nothing bad happens they feel prepared.

There's no use trying to change them, they can't help it.

I tell them they will be just as sad with a loss no matter how negative they are before hand, they just start being sad sooner rather than never.

The best example is the lottery winner that complains about the taxes that have to be paid. It's legit but, c'mon you won the lottery.
