When we have a HC that has a history with the Vol program and truly bleeds orange. Our problem right now is that we have a HC that is the son of a former legend... with the University of GEORGIA. How can Dooley possibly be a Vol fan himself? He didn't go to Tennessee, he didn't play for Tennessee, he didn't grow up a Tennessee fan. 90% of these young men on our team don't buy in to what Tennessee is all about and aren't true VFL's because Dooley can't and never will be able to sell it. This is by no means a "Bring Fulmer back" thread... it was evident to all that his time had come to an end. But I honestly believe the reason for our success under Fulmer was due to his roots within the Tennessee program. We need another HC that came bring this element back before we will ever be truly successful again IMO. We've all heard Manning say he doesn't want to coach, so that's a longshot, but it would take someone iconic to the Tennessee program like him to get us back on track.

Did you know that Dooley's dad played at Auburn but never coached there? Did you know that Pat Dye played at Georgia but never coached there?

Did you know that some people smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day and never get cancer?

My point being, its not always black and white. I think OUR problem is that we are trying to sell this VFL program to our players without the coaches even believing in it themselves.

Urban Meyer hurt Florida since he never went to UF or even stepped foot on the campus until his press conference.

Stupid thread. Do we have any such coaching prospects out there?? The only ones I can think of is Phil and Tee. With that logic, we are screwed.

We better never sign Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, Bob Stoops, or anyone else who did not play for the University of tennessee. We would truly suck then.

Nick Saban is a proud Alabama alumni. Urban Meyer still reminIsces about his college days at Florida. Bob Stoops went to school at Oklahoma?

This is the reason that we have fallen far and accept mediocrity now.

Times change. No coaches stay at one school for a long time. Money talks this day and age and if you get what you pay for.

You could go the Michigan State route and bring back a former Coordinator who went on to be something bigger and better somewhere else, and who now feels that puttting tVols back on top would be his final destination job.

I think the coach needs to have passion for the job, and for the school. But that doesnt mean he had to play here. But he does need to embrace the passion and history of the school. And it helps if he has assistants that can coach kids up a little.<----this may be your problem.

There is little to no correlation in the entire history of college football between the success of a program's head coach and whether or not he played ball there.

Good coaches win, bad coaches lose. If a good coach wins at his alma mater, it makes for a nice story...but it isn't (or shouldn't be) justification for hiring him in the first place.

I can understand the motivation that might come from coaching at your Alma Mater, but coaching is coaching. They [said coach] should embrace the team and stadium like it was their own. We have lots of people on VN that could coach and they have never played for UT.

That last part was a joke, BTW.

Sorry man, but I have to disagree...

It's nice, but not necessary by any means. Plenty of precedent that says this is wrong.

Usually I disagree with most everything you post, but this was an excellent example, even if it did include sickly little Urbie. :)

I don't worry about Dooley not being UT alumni. He did however, grow up around SEC football and should understand the passion, history and iconic traditions that go with each team of the SEC and I believe Dooley does. Not an issue to me.

RUMOR: my sources say that Johnny Majors is being interviewed today for the RB coach position... Key to hire is that he is VFL :loco:

While having a Tennessee guy would be nice, it shouldn't be requirement number one for any hire. You go after the best hire, not the familiar name. A Big Orange good ole boys club doesn't equal success.
