We Will Know. . .

How's that different from going 3 & out for entire second half of games?! Defense is still on field a lot, at least we'll have some points on the board?!
Wait and see how fast a CJH offense is. He'll make Chaney look like Woody Hayes.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing but our D is going to need to be fit and deep or it's going to get ugly EVEN against teams we should blow out. There's only so much a D can take. We saw it last year and it'll be magnified by the "hurry up" offense.

I'm going to give Heupel the same expectations that I have for just about any coach coming into a down-and-out program:

By year 3 our games against Florida and Georgia should determine the east.

Ultimately, I'm expecting something like this:

Year 1: 4-8

Year 2: 6-6 or 7-5

Year 3: 9-3

May be aiming too high--wouldn't be surprised if I'd have to push everything back a year (3-9 or 4-8 in year 1, 5-7 year 2).

Of course, if we surprise everyone with a 6-6 performance in year 1, then everything is pushed up a year.

Stranger things have happened, I guess.

New head coach who hasn't put a staff together yet. It's Feb and spring practices will start soon. New system for existing players, new coaches who don't know their players and vice-versa. Not sure which players will be back and which recruits will actually sign. Not sure, under this scenario, I'd be predicting any blowouts.

That’s an expectation... I swear.
No need to swear. It's not an expectation, in that I don't expect them to win every game or any at all. I expect that we will know, during the first few games, the potential of what they can become.

Bowling Green should be a blowout win for UT.
Pitt will be a tough game, they are probably about where we are right now.
Tech should also be a blowout win for UT

So if we are not 3-0 going into the florida game, I think it is a bad sign.

Bowling Green is not going to be a walk in the park

Gut feeling

. . . how good our coach is within the first few games of the year.

It seems that his offenses perform well, regardless of the star power across the board. I believe we have enough talent to see the potential of how well this system will work within the first few games.

Now, I'm not saying we'll be lighting it up at a 42ppg pace right away. I just think we'll see flashes of how the offense can perform within the first couple games.

Hopefully we have a DC who can compensate his scheme for early success as well.
I think you’re right. If Tennessee blows out the first three opponents, at least he’s doing what we expect. So so glad Chaney is gone, he was very good in his day but it’s obviously passed him by.

So if we are not 3-0 going into the florida game, I think it is a bad sign.

Pitt went 6-5 this past year.
they didn’t fire their coach.
Their not putting in a totally new system.

Tennessee went 3-7.
Tennessee has lost a ton of players to transfer.
Probable NCAA sanctions.

If Tennessee loses to Pitt.......in NO way would that be a bad sign.

Heck this should be a tough game without all the NCAA, coaching and transfer stuff.....for Tennessee.

Nothing for Tennessee probably will be......however they lost every game this past season.......the “closest” game was a 25 point loss to Buffalo.

This “shouldn’t” be close at all.

We will be thin going into season hopefully we can cherry pick some good transfers. Pick up some jucos. But your right every single game will be a dog fight. Might be able to hang with some were not supposed to but depth will take over. Something were to familiar with.

Maybe. I think he needs to try to talk Wright from leaving. Losing 5 starting level linemen (Kennedy, Smith, Wright, Morris, and Johnson) won’t be easy no matter how great of an offensive mind he is

You can still tell if the team is well coached even if they are getting physically beat.

No game will be a give me. All these little schools run a up tempo. Most of our games i believe will be if our defense can get off the field. If we go out and throw 3 incomplete passes and punt and leave the defense on field all day it could be georgia st all over again type feel.

I agree with that. That’s why I like Saterfield. That App st team was out coaching us. Same with the BGSU team that I think Babers was coaching

You could tell in the WVA game our guys were lost and unprepared. Didn't get much better from there.

I think some of you are forgetting that we may not be able to field a competitive team. I believe we will be at Vandy level in terms of talent, maybe a smidge better. The cupboard is absolutely bare boys, just a couple grains a rice and some pintos. I think we'll see some offense... at times. Until we see some injuries and then, not at all. I fully expect one of the worst seasons in Orange history coming up and we've had some miserable ones lately, so that's saying something. If we make it to the toothless skinner bowl in jumpstart, arkansas, and finish 6-7, I will nominate CJH for coach of the decade.

my bad: we probably ain't bowlin' anyway... forgot that.

The defense should be terrifying us all right now. As others have mentioned, the fast and free wheeling offense is going to have some fast 3 and outs AND some fast scores. We're going to need depth on defense or we're going to get gassed late in the halves, ESPECIALLY with teams who try to slow down the game and grind on our defense.

If I were a coach facing CJH, I'd want long, clock killing, defense exhausting drives for game control. The thought being: Tennessee may score early but we can chew away and run Tennessee's defense ragged because they're on the field so much.

It's going to be brutal on defense even if we're putting up 40ppg because CJH isn't known for "ball control" offense. I like that it's exciting but it comes with a cost. I'm HOPING we can field a defense with depth AND play ball control when we need to.
You mean the way our offense did people in the 90's. Works great..really works great with 8 minute on the clock in the 4th quarter with a lead and the ball. Have a 6-7 minute drive, scored at touchdown and walk away with the win. Doubt our offense will look to sustain many 6 minute drives but score as quickly as possible.

So you're going to judge this guy based on his first 3 games and make a blanket judgement with a team he didn’t recruit...that’s brilliant, Jesus.

It took MS State fans time to understand Leach's offense and became happier with the improvement at the end of the year. Yes State lost to GA by 7 , ole MS by 7 and Auburn by 14. Beat MO by 19 and a ranked Tulsa team in a bowl. the last 5 games. It takes players time to understand and play the fast paced offense.
I hope to see some improvement at the start but I'll gauge the job the staff is doing on the 2nd half of the season.
Spring practice should make a big difference from not having one last year.

Why bring Jesus into it?

Judgement? No. See potential and glimpses of what they can do? Yes.

Why go down this road in week 2?

Unfortunately I think Covid is going to hurt us again, few S&C workouts, few Spring workouts, few Dummer workouts and few Fall workouts is seriously going to limit our time for coaches to teach and players to learn and get it down well at all.

Sadly I think our coaches will be seriously trying to teach and players trying to learn as fast as they can during the games, NOT a good situation at all for entire new O and D playbooks with brand new coaches.

We all need to pray hard that something happens to start killing off this Covid mess that China sent us.

Our players and coaches are going to have a tough enough mountain to climb without Covid, with Covid it's going to be like a rock wall almost straight up.

I hope we all learn, finally, NOT to overexpect like we do most seasons.

But I sure would love a miracle season and to kick serious butts of everyone!

VFL...GBO!!!
