. . . how good our coach is within the first few games of the year.

It seems that his offenses perform well, regardless of the star power across the board. I believe we have enough talent to see the potential of how well this system will work within the first few games.

Now, I'm not saying we'll be lighting it up at a 42ppg pace right away. I just think we'll see flashes of how the offense can perform within the first couple games.

Hopefully we have a DC who can compensate his scheme for early success as well.

It took MS State fans time to understand Leach's offense and became happier with the improvement at the end of the year. Yes State lost to GA by 7 , ole MS by 7 and Auburn by 14. Beat MO by 19 and a ranked Tulsa team in a bowl. the last 5 games. It takes players time to understand and play the fast paced offense.
I hope to see some improvement at the start but I'll gauge the job the staff is doing on the 2nd half of the season.

CJH frequently mentions running a defense which creates negative plays. Are there any stats which show how his defense at UCF performed in that regard?

Also, there is legitimate concern the defense could be on the field a lot and become exhausted. Is there a way to look at his UCF teams to gain insight on that concern?

2nd half of the season will tell more. I believe the first few games will show us the potential the team has. We should get an early glimpse of what they can become.

I think there is a way to determine those things. A good stats site should tell everything in those regards.

I think we'll know if we're off to the right start, know for sure, if at the end of the season, we're all upset about not being able to to go a bowl game because of the recruiting violations, rather than upset about how the games were played.

It will be refreshing to, for once, be solid as a program, fans and players and their families and coaches and administration all united in being upset about the same thing. That will be awesome. Hope it plays out that way.

I do agree with you that the first 3 games will give us a good first read. Though we won't feel the real squeeze until we get into conference play and run up against Florida, Georgia, and Bama, along with Kentucky, Mizzou, and USCe. Plus, it'll be fun having Lane and Ole Miss in the house.

In fact, I'd say games #4 to #7 (Florida, Mizzou, USCe, Ole Miss) will be the real litmus test. We can gauge ourselves as a rebuilding program pretty well against those four.

The defense should be terrifying us all right now. As others have mentioned, the fast and free wheeling offense is going to have some fast 3 and outs AND some fast scores. We're going to need depth on defense or we're going to get gassed late in the halves, ESPECIALLY with teams who try to slow down the game and grind on our defense.

If I were a coach facing CJH, I'd want long, clock killing, defense exhausting drives for game control. The thought being: Tennessee may score early but we can chew away and run Tennessee's defense ragged because they're on the field so much.

It's going to be brutal on defense even if we're putting up 40ppg because CJH isn't known for "ball control" offense. I like that it's exciting but it comes with a cost. I'm HOPING we can field a defense with depth AND play ball control when we need to.

We will know how good Coach Heupel is in 5-6 seasons. He will be Tennessee head football coach for 6 or more seasons and will pull Tennessee out of the difficulties they're currently in with the coming NCAA sanctions.

Bowling Green should be a blowout win for UT.
Pitt will be a tough game, they are probably about where we are right now.
Tech should also be a blowout win for UT

So if we are not 3-0 going into the florida game, I think it is a bad sign.

New head coach who hasn't put a staff together yet. It's Feb and spring practices will start soon. New system for existing players, new coaches who don't know their players and vice-versa. Not sure which players will be back and which recruits will actually sign. Not sure, under this scenario, I'd be predicting any blowouts.

Even with dud coaches we scrape out top 15-20 recruiting classes. To compete we need recruiting classes consistently in the top 5-10

And just like that, CJH is on notice. "He better win now." Do we all not see how freaking crazy expectations are right now?

How many years in a row do we have to bottom feeders before yall get it, its not an overnight turn around. We keep picking dramatically different coaching styles and start over from square 1. Every. Damn. Time.

Flame away with the same BS "good coaches win immediately" nonsense.

Yeah, he'll likely be here for a bit. We'll know how good he is in that time. We'll know in the first few games what his on-field potential is. Should give a glimpse of what he's trying to do and how potent his scheme is.

Who said win immediately? Who said he's on notice? How in the world did you come to that conclusion after reading the OP?

Do you understand what potential means? What makes you think that seeing flashes of potential equals a demand to win right now? . . so many questions. . . jeez, knee-jerk much?

One thing I’ll predict is no wild gesticulating hand waving histrionics from the sideline if a quarterback even looks to be considering a risky throw...then full support when another completes two consecutive pick sixes.

I think he may be referring to tackles behind LOS, PBUs, QB pressures, sacks, forced penalties--things like that. I think UCF was top 10 in sacks, led country is TFL one year, top 10 in turnovers, led in fumbles recovered. They seem to have done a really good job of disrupting offenses. This was with Randy Shannon as DC.
