We tried to temper your expectations

I’ve waited awhile to post purposely so I would be speaking more thru reason than emotion. Although you wouldn’t know it from my post count I’ve been with volnation 14 years, and I’ve finally learned emotional knee jerk reactions are destructive. They give trolling enemy lurkers big laughs, they give lurking players and perhaps an occasional coach heartburn. We all wanted to see our Volunteers compete strongly. Maybe even win, hope in something you love is natural. If you care to look at my last 99 or so posts probably a dozen spoke to the importance of pressuring the qb with the d linemen how they must penetrate not just an initial hit and stall. How both O and D linemen must control the ground, as it was assumed the line coaches would evaluate, adjust, train the linemen properly. What a surprise it was for me to sit and watch in disbelief. I was like coaches Rocker and Friend you care to step up to the mike and explain this? But it’s only one game, and perhaps the roster learned from it. It’s not easy facing friends after a loss like this, especially in another state, embarrassing, but it’ll pass because I love our Volunteers. I’ll be hoping for a victory next game. Go Vols.

Tennessee couldn’t give a bad Vandy team a fight last year. How in heck were they supposed to give a good team a fight all game right out of the gate this year?

If you guys are wanting to see improvement wait until they play teams they can at lest compete against.

However many losses we can bear, losses to Vandy and Kentucky are more than anyone can expect of us. There is no learning how to take them. We might go crazy.

I hear you there

But really from what we have seen...........as bad as it was.......Tennessee has to get to where they can compete vs the KY’s of the world befor they can think of even beating the SC’s of the world.

Sounds so dumb when not so long ago all those games were thought of as auto’s once the schedule came out.

You’re looking at a 12 pt game in the 4th if we execute (making it 33 - 21). Instead we trick it off, give WV the ball & they go the length of the field to make the game uglier than it actually was (40 - 14). In the end, Grier torched our defensive backfield for 429 yards. I’m almost positive the coaches will watch the film, so relax & let them earn their salaries. We’ve got 2 games before Florida...that’s a lot of reps for everybody including the young db’s.

Some were pumping us up way too high thru fall practice and a number of us tried to reel in their enthusiasm so it wouldn't be so disappointing. The D was one of the worst in the nation last year and it started out looking almost as horrible in the opener against WV. Giving deserved props to Grier, Jennings, and their much better FB team, Grier was able to stand there and pick our secondary apart. No penetration by our DL even on infrequent blitz calls. We are weak up front. The secondary never looked back and had WV receivers beat them numerous times. The LBer corp was uninspiring as well. Just a porous D that allowed them to run/pass almost at will. Their RBs were making 5 yds after initial contact even with seniors Tuttle and Phillips grabbing instead of tackling.

On the positive side, Gitmo has a rifle arm and he can be a very good QB, which many were trying to hammer home well before fall practice began. He has the tools and can deliver the ball on a rope when he has protection. Still needs work recognizing D setups and checking out of bad situations. Receivers looked fine and RB Jordan ran well despite an OL that has to improve if we want to get 6 wins, which will prove a tall order.

Punter Doyle averaged 38 yds and had good elevation on his punts. Very encouraging for the kicking game. Note: Pruitt mentioned that freshman had earned playing time with their fall practice performance and would see even more of them soon. What that tells me is that we have upper classmen who have and will continue losing their jobs to young freshmen who are better. Hopefully that includes DL where we had no push, no penetration, and practically quit fighting at times. Meanwhile, WV's D nearly took our QB's head off a few times with their defensive rush. Got to get better, esp in all phases of D, or we are sure to finish near the bottom of SEC and national defensive stats once again.

Kongbo would rather wrestle than tackle the ball carrier

I knew that WV was going to get a lot of yardage on our defense. They came into this game with what many believe to be the finest passing game in the country. Remember, it's WV's first game of a new season also, and some have expectations as the finest team they have fielded. We don't know yet. Meanwhile , though there are area's that we're very talented( offensive skill position, LB's and safeties) o-line and secondary were the two gaping holes in our game that had to be rebuilt. Note all the players switching positions. If everything was ok there, they wouldn't have been doing that. So I was prepared to be torched for high yardage in the passing game.

That being said, the part I can't accept is the o-line making the WV defense look like a power house. I don't expect greatness from them this year but we should expect them to be serviceable. This offense would take off if they could be just that. You saw a second string RB gain 118 yrds and get it all on his own. Do you think last years offense could of had a 17 play drive for a td? I don't know what it is that can't be fixed about o-line. We don't improve until they improve, that is all there is to that.
As for the OLine they actually appeared to be playing better as that game went on Saturday. The problem or biggest problem was the play calling or lack of. UWV was actually giving us the underneath routes like they were protecting against the deep threat. A good OC would have went over the top about every 8 plays to keep them in that mindset so we'd continue to be open underneath. That was our bread and butter and Danielson,(CBS), mentioned it. We got away with one 4th and goal TD. IMO on 1st and goal from the 1-2 yd line it's not gonna take 4 plays to get in. There's a lack of mis-direction plays, counter runs, screen passes missing and I think it's because the OC feels like the offense hasn't developed that far yet. I do think the pass and catch game looked good and for that reason UT should have used it lots more. OC needs to teach a few trick plays to use down close to goal line. I very much think UT will improve. The final score in this game should have been 33-21 if not for some stupid mis-calls and an unnecessary penalty.

I don’t think we know how good or bad anybody is yet. Might be some surprises either way.
I didn't see much of anything that can't be improved on during the next few weeks. Coach done gave us the heads up that we may be seeing more younger players getting more time as the the season rolls along. I don't know how any realistic fan can expect anything after 25 practice days with new system being installed on both sides of the ball. Any coach, no matter who, won't have a standard to gauge by until the team actually takes the field and starts hitting. On the other hand UWV had players who have played together for quite awhile. A couple of good classes from now we'll be a unit but we weren't playing as a unit Saturday.

Three freshman in the secondary against a potential Heisman with NFL quality receivers to throw to is a recipe for disaster and it was. That said, there is still a lot of improvement needed all the way around on defense. And the OL, well they stayed in the locker room apparently because they never showed up.

I really hope I don't start seeing fire CJP threads pop up within the next month, or so! The man has to completely rebuild several position groups from the ground up! IT'S GOING TO TAKE SOME TIME! year 2 is when I expect to see a significant Improvement. Also, I still believe we can win 7 games this year. JMO

Consider the source, but Basilio had been claiming for weeks before the WVU game that CJP was privately telling the big money boosters that he was very confident the Vols would win.

Anyone who still has expectations after the past 10 years is just in for a let down. Lol.

I'm just glad the Preds start playing soon.

You are part of the crowd that remains problematic for the realists. You insist on talking success without producing success. Like an OM fan that yelled at me pregame in Memphis in 96 that they would kill us and sat sullenly later in the game as we amassed a 42-3 win over them. Talk is cheap, even in sports. It don't mean a thing if you can't back it up. Or even come close!

Is Liberty Volance taking liberties with the liberty of Vol Nation?!
