Does the typical Michigan fan follow the Patriots because of Tom Brady? Does the USC fan follow the Bengals because of Carson Palmer? What is it about Peyton Manning that causes Tennessee fans to root for him and his team as much or more than their own pro team? How many people from this area became a Colts fan the minute they drafted Manning? I'll admit I am one of them. Sure I have come to like the other players through the years (Harrison, James, Clark, Wayne, etc.) but I first became a Colts fan when they drafted the man who personifies everything we think of when we think of what it is to be a Tennessee Volunteer, to bleed orange, a man who didn't have to choose UT, but when he did has poured his heart and soul into this university ever since. Did he accomplish everything he would have liked? No, but he accomplished a lot, and even though he wasn't on the field that day in '99, he had as much to do with that championship as anybody.
Has any former player ever done so much for his college and pro teams than Peyton Manning has? Of course the whole country now knows where the Colts would be without him - absolutely nowhere. Now they are finally coming to terms with the fact that the greatest Vol of all time is truly the greatest quarterback of all time. But UT fans knew that all along.
When he got passed over for the Heisman it was a slap in the face of Orange Nation everywhere. When he got drafted first, we all felt proud. We felt proud as the MVPs started rolling in, then the Super Bowl, and now another chance at greatness. We'll be rooting for the Colts and Peyton almost as much as we root for the Vols in the fall. We have his back because he has had ours ever since he chose the school we love when he could have gone anywhere, and he continues to be an ambassador for UT, giving his time and his money, over and over again, when he doesn't have to.
So yes there should definitely be a statue of Peyton Manning somewhere in the house that General Neyland built, not only because Peyton Manning personifies the heart and soul of everything it means to be a Vol, but also because the greatest quarterback to ever play at UT is by and large regarded by the world as the greatest quarterback to ever put on pads and play the game of football. And that is something we can all take pride in.
