Sydney Johnson's Coaching Tree

Many influences have shaped the playing and coaching careers of Sydney Johnson, from his roots in Maryland to a collegiate career at Princeton, playing professionally in Italy and coaching at Georgetown and at his alma mater.

Fletcher Arritt is the head boys basketball coach at Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Va., where Sydney Johnson played for a season after graduating from Towson Catholic High School in 1992.

Upon arriving at Princeton, Pete Carril coached Johnson from 1993 until his retirement in 1996. In Carril's final season, Johnson's junior year, the Tigers defeated Penn in an Ivy League playoff and pulled one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history, defeating UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Armond Hill '85 was an assistant coach at Princeton for Johnson's first two seasons before moving on to a head coaching position at Columbia and later an assistant coaching job with the Boston Celtics, where he helped win the 2008 NBA title.

John Thompson III '88 was an assistant coach during Johnson's final two years as a Princeton player. The Tigers made the NCAA Tournament both seasons, and Thompson tabbed Johnson as an assistant coach at Georgetown once Johnson finished his playing career in Italy in 2004.

While in Italy, Luca Dalmonte coached Johnson on the Avellino team from 2000-2002 during Johnson's seven-season European career that produced three Italian League titles.

After Johnson and Thompson reunited on the Georgetown bench from 2004-2007 and advanced to the 2007 NCAA Final Four, Johnson accepted the head coaching position at Princeton on Apr. 20, 2007. Two of his assistant coaches are Princeton alums, including a two-season teammate in Brian Earl '99 as well as Scott Greenman '06, both of whom won Ivy League titles during their stints in Princeton uniforms.

Johnson came closer to beating Kentucky this year than Pearl did.

Also, the Princeton weave does not require 5-star talent to run.

Haha, no joke. Going off memory here, but didn't Craig Robinson play at Princeton? I know he coached Brown too. May be off, don't care to look it up. If true, then I rest my case.
