Many influences have shaped the playing and coaching careers of Sydney Johnson, from his roots in Maryland to a collegiate career at Princeton, playing professionally in Italy and coaching at Georgetown and at his alma mater.
Fletcher Arritt is the head boys basketball coach at Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Va., where Sydney Johnson played for a season after graduating from Towson Catholic High School in 1992.
Upon arriving at Princeton, Pete Carril coached Johnson from 1993 until his retirement in 1996. In Carril's final season, Johnson's junior year, the Tigers defeated Penn in an Ivy League playoff and pulled one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history, defeating UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

After Johnson and Thompson reunited on the Georgetown bench from 2004-2007 and advanced to the 2007 NCAA Final Four, Johnson accepted the head coaching position at Princeton on Apr. 20, 2007. Two of his assistant coaches are Princeton alums, including a two-season teammate in Brian Earl '99 as well as Scott Greenman '06, both of whom won Ivy League titles during their stints in Princeton uniforms.
