A mobile QB is a weapon some offenses have , some don't. When you face one that does it forces a defense to slow down and contain. You design your offense around the roster, utilizing the talent you have to the utmost not vice versa, IMO some coordinators decide on their pet system and ignore the paticular talents players have or don't and when the results are lacking the players are assumed to be un performing. That point IMO is 1 factor among others that separate the top 5 teams from the 10-25's. To say that a mobile Qb isn't something worth thinking about at UT, in the SEC or speed conference isn't being realistic, which in CPF's camp is .....expected.

I think clausen and ainge's problem wasn't so much their ability to run but their ability to lead. More than anything i think we need a more vocal take charge guy as our qb. Crompton seems fiery lets see how well he leads.

Crompton ran a 4.8 40 in High School. Stevens is slower then that. Unless BJ Coleman gets the start, UT will have less speed at QB then last year with Ainge.

Watching the Motor City Bowl and there was just a commercial on for the Capital One Bowl. It was the UT vs. Michigan blowout. ESPN loves us...

Crompton is more evasive and has better game speed where as Ainge had almost no game speed.

Yeah, I miss Tee. I want a mobile quarterback that can run if he has too, maybe even a duel threat. But not one who runs all the time like vick. Call me old, but I still love the deep ball we used to throw, like when Tee did just that on 1-4-99. Yeah, we all know that date!!!! If you don't, get off here!!!!!!

Yeah, Clausen's inability to lead is why his combined career record at Florida, Alabama, and Miami was 5-0.

I'd leave Bama out of the argument since those were the years they were losing to the likes if Northern Illinois and La Tech.

And yet they beat us and lost to Louisiana Monroe in the same year. I think a Bama win always counts.

he has speed but he's to much of a nancy boy to use it. in the vandy game i remember him running for a 4 yd gain, and he looked pretty fast(of course he went straight out of bounds before anybody was near him). it looked like all year there were at least 5-10 times a game where he could have tucked and ran, but he threw an incompletion instead. i remember after the florida game thinking that if we would somehow make it to the SECCG, that even though it would be the most important game of Ainge's career, he would still throw the ball away instead of running and sure enough it happened a few times vs LSU. now that that game is over, we'll see what he does if things get scary vs wisconsin

Of the QBs you just listed, D.J. Shockley is the only one I would truly put in the "dual threat" category. Mauk and Periloux had escapability, but weren't really guys the opposing defense had to scheme against. Leak and Campbell had no desire to run the ball unless it was out of fear.

Neither Jason Campbell nor Chris Leak are remotely mobile.

they combined for 22 running TDs and almost 500 yds (fyi- take away the negative yardage that was accounted for sacks and its much more). thats at least remotely mobile in my standards

I don't want a Dennis Dixon type QB, but I agree with the OP that a mobile QB makes our team more competitive. I don't even care if the offensive passing attack is, "make 2 reads and tuck it." I think Crompton could possibly fill that role, i'm not sure how mobile he is anymore. A big, tall guy with JUST ENOUGH speed to get a 3rd and 5 with his legs.
