Notwithstanding the hefty fee charged out-of-state students, that discrepancy is largely courtesy of the Bredesen administration. When I attended grad school at UT during Peyton's era, UT was still an exceptional value among state universities nationwide. In the infinite absence of wisdom, Bredesen undercut funding for our flagship university (UTK) in favor of the Board of Regents system (e.g. MTSU, ETSU, etc.). Consequently, UT has had no alternative but to raise tuition at an 8-10% per annum clip for years on end. Unfortunately, no objective rating would now list UT as providing an excellent value for the caliber of education that it provides.

Well damn.

100% agree. Which has pushed and continues to push it out of the affordability range of a very large segment of students in the state in which its mission is to serve as a land grant university.

Yes. For a Hah-vuhd grad with a background in the hard sciences, Bredesen exercised an extraordinary density, if not overt malice, in terms of the best strategic interest of higher education in Tennessee.

From Rivals -

Jones also added Willie Martinez the safeties for Tennessee. Martinez has 10 years of SEC coaching experience and helped accumulate 90 wins during his tenure at Georgia.

Tommy Thigpen is also going to Tennessee as the cornerbacks coach. Thigpen was one of the best recruiters on the Auburn staff and was named a Rivals.com Top 25 recruiter twice -- in 2006 and 2009.

The three have hit the recruiting trail hard as Martinez helped flip former Auburn three-star defensive back commit Lemond Johnson.
