Yes we shall completely ignore Nebraska because they aren't in the same conference as VT and they have a DT who tossed around Colt McCoy like a rag doll. We can also ignore that all four of VTs OOC opponents are bowling. Also we can ignore that 4 of VTs opponents played in conference championship games and three of them won their champtionship games. I wouldn't want to include that an ACC team, Clemson, manhandled an SEC team that took UT into overtime. (If Wisky handled Miami than Clemson handled UK)
I also wouldn't want to point out the UT doesn't have a single win over a team that is currently ranked. UTs most impressive win overall is USC would was ranked when played, but isn't any longer. UTs most impressive OOC win is Ohio.
I always hear that 7-5 SEC is harder to come by than 9-3 ACC, but that is completely ignoring 1/3 of the schedule. Yes you guys played Bama like we did, but we did that on top of our conference schedule. We also did that with Nebraska and ECU. All three teams played in their conference championship games and two of them won. The only one who didn't participate in their conference championship game is Marshall and even they went bowling. None of the OOC teams yall played participated in conference championship games or won their conference. In fact, other than Ohio in the Mac, none of them were even in contention to win their conference.
VT plays in a very weak conference and that's why it is difficult to predict how they will match up against UT. That's all. NCSU, Maryland, UVa, and Duke are all at or below the Vandy level. There wasn't a team in the ACC this year that would have finished above mid-pack in the SEC this year. That's just a simple fact. UK belongs in the ACC more than the SEC. They are at their high water mark right now in football... which for the Cats means a "historic" run of 4 consecutive seasons with 7 or 8 wins.
The fact that a beat up UT team played them poorly is embarrassing... but not indicative of any kind of trend between the those two programs or the strength of the two conferences this year.
Did you really say that Clemson
manhandled UK though? The game went into the 4th qtr 14-13. Clemson scored late after a fumble created a short field to make it 21-13. UK came up one yard short on 4th down at Clemson's 25 on their last 4th qtr drive. UK held them to their ACC season avg in rushing and about 60 yds under their ACC avg for total O.... Remember, UK is a traditional cellar dweller in the SEC that
finished 5th in the SEC East while Clemson was a division champ this year in the ACC.
I live in Big 12 country and Nebraska backed into the CG by being basically the least incompetent team in the Big 12 North. To give you an idea, the North rep was decided in the last weekend of the reg season. KSU lost putting NU in the CG.... KSU also became bowl ineligible with that loss.
NU played better than expected vs Texas... and it is pretty well acknowledged that Texas didn't take NU serious enough.
I respect Pelini. I respect what he's doing at NU. But they are rebuilding right now at best. They had no business in that game. Suh is the only player on their team likely to be drafted this year and probably next.
FTR, VT may slap the Vols around... I don't know. UT
WAS a mid-pack team in the SEC this year for the most part. The Vols are thin almost everywhere and need more talent to reach the top of the SEC. That said, when they've been healthy... even with less talent... they played Bama and UF like they belonged at the top.
On Thursday, UT will be as healthy as they've been since Frazier's knee injury (So Csr in the 7th game).
