We have a Top 25 Defense

If you skew the Georgia Tech game to our 372 yard per game average instead of the 655 we gave up to them that places us right at 25th in the nation as far as yardage is concerned. We never play triple option teams so I think it's fair to throw the stats out on that game and look at it as our per game average compared to the other games. If you look at it objectively our defense has performed remarkably well this season compared to the last few years. If our offense would actually sustain drives instead of going 3 and out all the time we could be looking at a top 15 defense which is amazing. I would just like to give a shoutout to the defense because through all the chaos they have actually played very well and we should all be proud of their effort.

I agree here and honestly think our defense has taken a huge step forward.

Was wondering if and when Butch is fired does the new coach keep Shoop and other coaches, if so who?

If you take away sec games we are undeafeated!!!!!!!

Ok....how does that relate to my post?

We blitz at appropriate times, contain well and get guys to the ball. I think the scheme and techniques have been good so far not great but definite improvement from last years debacle and that is with the loss of some “all-time” great vols.

Feel like we are coached well there...

Because i disagree with the whole premise. We are not a top 25 defense. I know this because our defense is not ranked in the top 25, in any category. You cannot simply discount games to appear the way you want.

Our d has played okay against weal teams. And at times they have played very well. If our o were better it would certainly help our d. However, the d is still sloppy and lacks basic fundamentals.

South Carolina rushing vs Tennessee 2016: 158yrds

They had 194 rushing yards yesterday.

How is that an improvement?

They had 325 total yards in 2016 and they had 323 total yards yesterday.

WOW. TWO YARDS BETTER THAN LAST YEAR Lololol

Maybe you’re right, but I still think they look better than last year and if I do most likely others do too, honestly I hope Jones turns the season around still, gets an extension and is hear next year and beyond just to bug the **** out of all the lifeless naysayers on this site and butt hurt media! Lol

Go Vols

Its funny that you think the "lifeless naysayers" are thay way just to pick on poor Butch Jones. He is simply not a good football coach, not sure how much evidence you need to see to come to that conclusion but he has provided us plenty.

Just out of curiosity, what is your definition of "turn it around?"

and if UGA never scored it would still be 0-0 two weeks later. What the hell is wrong with people?

Maybe.

As someone that has watched six straight years of "our offense is anemic and the defense will need to win the game somehow", it sucks knowing you have an awesome defense for them to just be gassed in the fourth because your offense couldn't stay on the field.

GT hasn't had another yardage game e that since they played UT. Why should UT get to throw it out?

I agree with you on Jones.... he has had more than an opportunity to prove he can get us to the place we should be expecting to be. Bad losses outweigh close wins all day imo and Jones has a bunch on his resume.

I don’t understand what good it is doing for us all to concentrate on negatives, stats aside the product on the defensive side of the football looks to be getting the job done outside of times our offense has loaded their backs with too much to carry... our guys get worn out.

I feel Jones made a huge mistake not hiring a big time OC, like dejavu of Fulmers last year.

The only problem I have is that some on here won’t discuss others views on UT football but they’d rather attack views like an angry mob.

Our Corners are awful. I have not faced a real Italy thrower the Missouri guy will throw for 500 yards

To your point, no Bituli at MLB recently and Wiggins has disappeared as a corner option. Wiggins can't be worse than what we've put on the field, get him out there!

Paul Johnson has to be scratching his head and wondering how the hell he beat Kirby Smart but could not get by what may end up being one of the worst team's in UT football history.

If you round down my mortgage payment to match my water bill my budget would look much better.

I guess Air Force didn't torch us back in the Fulmer days either. I guess GA Southern didn't gash Alabama for 300 rushing yards. If you can't discount rushing stats against a triple option team that we never gameplan against and never play then you really don't look at things objectively. We could have scheduled Austin Peay and would be a Top 20 defense statistically but we didn't. We scheduled a team that runs a very difficult scheme. They almost took down Miami this past week. Some people fail to look at things objectively. Yes the GT game happened and you can't take away the stats that actually happened but that was an abnormal team. If we played a normal team we would be Top 20 at the very least.

If Kiffin didn't leave for USC we'd be winning the east regularly by now.

... or at least on probation.

Then imo, if you want to point out the positives of the defense dont do them in such a way that is sure to bring criticism such as completely dismissing stats.

I would argue that we have only played two good team, GT and UGA and we see what happened there.
