After much reflection, my take is 4 words:

We grow with Butch.

Sure, he has proven he doesn't know what the **** he's doing in this league sometimes. At times, he's obviously been in over his head. So were we when he showed up. He will fix the offense, he's already cut ties with long time assistants before to get it right (see: Shoop).

He grows, we grow.

He's our guy. He doesn't have all that fancy experience a guy like Saban had. Fact is, Tennessee doesn't get a Saban or Meyer. We build a Fulmer. He grew while we did too, so why would this be different.

I'll hate Butch +\-175 days out of every year, but he is a VFL. He will grow up in front of our eyes. In a world looking for instant gratification, we will show loyalty to a man that recruited better than anyone at Tennessee FOR Tennessee other than Fulmer.

When we're old as ****, we will tell people about a coach we took a chance on and a coach that took a chance on us.

We grow with Butch.

After this whole Jalen disaster has come to light, I'm willing to put up with another year as long as he makes serious changes to staff and delegates his clear weaknesses and there is a clear improvement in the team for the rest of this year's schedule.

Edit: I still fully EXPECT he will get himself fired as early as this season, though.

I was worried if Butch went 10-2 and did well at SEC CG game, Texas would take him away. Now I am worried we are stuck with Butch. I can't make up my mind.

I guess we have to grow with Butch now as we won't be able to afford his 10 million buyout. Growing up with Dooley was painful. Hopefully this wont be as bad.

Totally agree with OP. The guy is getting better, and better, and better. He's figuring it out. How to be a big time SEC program. He just figured out how to go for it on forth and inches, how to pound it in when needed, and how to survive the pressure chamber.

I hope he does grow but he has to get out of his own way first and learn he can't control everything. I can deal with Butch for another year but someone has to step in and save him from himself cause outside of CRG his offensive coaching staff is straight trash and it need to be burned.

Hope this also make him stop with them dumb cliches.

I like a pro-Butch thread that begins with the OP admitting that Butch doesn't know what he's doing some of the time.

And just like that, ALL of our problems this year were actually the fault of the malcontent RB. Now that's he's gone we're gonna run roughshod over the rest of the league. Lol

Butch needs to learn from Dabo. Hire great assistant coaches, and let them do their thing. Butch can sell a program that is obvious by the way he has recruited. I think he made a good hire with Shoop. But, he needs to do the same on the offensive side of the ball. Let someone come in, and make this offense special. We have the pieces. We are still fairly young with the exception of qb. Most of the line and receivers will be back next yr, but Deboard isn't going to cut it. The roster is there, and with another good class the depth will get better. But, the offense we have shown this yr isn't going to cut it. We have to upgrade that side of the ball. Butch needs to swallow his pride, and upgrade that side of the ball. If he doesn't I think he will be gone by 2018.

He won't get fired this season. I don't have any inside sources, just how I feel unless we lose 7 straight.

I feel he's improved every year record wise, he's probably going to do the same this year. I think you let him make changes and see how they play out. Debord's contract is up at season's end. Start there and if he either doesn't make the change and it's the same thing next season then you look at Butch. Same case if he does cut Debord loose. A bad OC hire basically got Fulmer canned. It will make or break you(Obvious I know).

You will develop bi-polarness you keep reading these Vols blogs with their ups and downs,on again, off again style of play. I'm seeing it in a lot of posters. Also seeing a disguised witch hunt likely coming out of Fla. or Ga. designed to make CBJ look bad in various ways that aren't true plus it divides our fanbase. This type of chatter doesn't come from loyal orange fans. i'm cussing them out to the extent this site will allow. GO BIG ORANGE!!!

Yeah, Texas wants Butch. Please keep worrying yourself about that. About like me worrying that someone will just randomly give me millions of dollars.

Both are equally as likely.

I've seen him win more games every year because he's been a good recruiter and therefore we now have more talent than a majority of the teams we play not because he's grown as a coach. Not saying he couldn't surround himself with good assistants and succeed here but so far he's been a below average coach

Well if you have a bad apple, you throw it in the trash before it ruins the others.

If Hurd was the "bad apple" he should have been dealt with along time ago.

This team has struggled all year, and if In fact it was Hurd then Lyle should have dealt with this a long time ago. It would be another reason Jones is not competent enough to be the coach at the University of Tennessee
