We dodged a bullet with Becht.

I feel like the first quarter was a terrible warmup and if we had 5th quarter the level of would’ve continue to improve. Iowa State scored on their last 4 possessions, technically took a knee inside the one on the last one. Becht gutted it out .
It does look like he might have some dog in him.

We have the NCAA leader in interceptions thrown from a year ago.
And South Carolina has the NCAA leader in fumbles from last year. He's a Heisman hopeful though. Brett Favre threw 508 TDs and 336 picks in his NFL career. I'm in NO way saying Aguilar is Favre, but his "gunslinger" mentality is going to lead to some picks. I'm afraid people are going to focus on this stat if things don't go well. They already are. There's a huge difference between being careless with the ball and taking chances. I have no idea which category Aguilar falls in to, as he hasn't played a down for UT yet. I'm good with taking chances if the situation calls for it. I trust CJH in making those decisions. I would much rather have a risk taker than a QB that runs out of bounds on 4th down.

I'm going to reserve QB comparison until I see JA in game action. I wasn't very impressed with Becht or Johnson yesterday, though. I do find it interesting that the people defending Becht by saying he gutted out a win against a "good" Kansas St. are the same ones who trashed our QB and team for barely beating the "worst Bama team in 20 years" and a "trash" Florida team last year.

People trashed Nico because he sucked out loud, had a horrible attitude, and was a dumb player. Becht has 2 years of experience to go off of that outweigh one game.

I’d rather have a risk taker that doesn’t run out of bounds with no time remaining too. However, my comment is just that it is foolish to say Aguilar is better than Becht because Becht doesn’t protect the ball. For no reason at all, people took Becht’s performance yesterday as some sort of proof that Aguilar is good, which was just a really strange takeaway

Where did you get the idea he led the country in total offense? He has never done that.
Sorry he’s not just the leader for 2024 season, Joey heads into the 2025 campaign as the FBS active career leader in total offense per game (288.5, minimum 2,500 yards) and is second in passing yards per game (270.4, minimum 5,000 yards).

He wasn’t the leader for the 2024 season. 2024 wasn’t even his good season.
I know. I literally just corrected what I said to “active career leader”, not just a single season.

But as I also said, none of that nor how many INTs he has thrown in the past have anything to do with a single game he will play this season.

You’re just being argumentative and negative for the sake of it.

Saw no one make that argument.

Being happy with what we have Vs having something we saw yesterday doesn’t equate any proof of how Joey will play.

I’m always optimistic but I can see it now, JA goes 3 and out or throws a horrible pass, somewhere in here there will be a thread titled JA ain’t it!

Yes, Becht does have two years of experience. That experience came against Big 12 defenses. Yesterday was the first time I intentionally watched him play and I didn't come away impressed. That doesn't mean I automatically think Aguilar is or will be better. I don't think he's any better than Nico was, though, and both teams looked a little slow overall.

We’d smoke either of these teams. They look slow and very sloppy not a good combination
From watching the highlights, especially in the 2nd half, I think it's fair (and understadable) to think that the pitch, under those weather conditions, was not "agronomically suitable" to American football.

Which is a shame for Ireland, whose green expanses are world reknown.

I just wonder what kinds of spirits were available at concessions? 🥃

Gotta love making sweeping generalizations about a player after a Week 0 game in a foreign country in bad weather against a Top 25 team. I don’t think we have enough information to be declaring we “dodged a bullet” with Becht.

I’m afraid of what it says about me that I find myself constantly in agreement with a poster named “LegionnarieoftheMiserable”
Not to worry. Sometimes the blind acorn gets found by a squirrel. ;)

I value people who are willing to critique the prevailing opinion or status quo. I just think LoM has become so committed to the task that "negative" has simply become his default setting, regardless of logic or data. That makes his points less valuable to the discussion and that much easier for the status quo to dismiss out-of-hand. And that's really a loss to both sides.

But someone has to set the boundaries that mark the extremes, so maybe LoM serves some kind of purpose from outside the tent.

But if it gets lonely out there, LoM, come on inside.
