We deserved to lose (Facts inside)

The problem with these big money programs and the NFL is that if you don't win you get fired within 3 or 4 seasons.

We have a great coach and a great staff. Sure, it's easy to recognize those who suck, but ours don't suck.
Too many fans are spoiled by the likes of Saban.. Once Saban retires his success won't be repeated for another 75 years and Alabama won't be king of the hill any longer.

The blue blood programs go through cycles. Alabama wasn't very good in the 90s.
Oklahoma wasn't good in the mid-late 90s.

The real problem is that too many fans had too high expectations not anchored in reality.

Pruitt has even commented several times that they just aren't good.

Jones' recruiting and coaching was the same as a mid-major program. TN would have been a beast in a conference like the WAC... not P5 and surely not the SEC.

All these proven coaches had to have someone take a chance on them when they took their 1st HC job. This is not Pruitt's first coaching job. He WORKED and EARNED his chance at this job. He KNOWS football. Will he win a NC here? Who knows. Even if he doesn't win a NC here, we will be in a hell of a lot better shape when he leaves than we were when he arrived. Good lord he hasn't made it through his first season. Many of the people that are questioning his hire are the same people that thought he hung the moon two weeks ago. SHEESH!

Guys, we deserved to lose last night. Not we, the fans. We deserve medals. We have stuck by the Vols year after year after year while Florida, UGA, Alabama, etc have gone out and made big hires. But South Carolina deserved to beat Tennessee last night. Why? Because their administration is dedicated to winning (or at least trying to win). South Carolina's last 3 hires have been Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, and Will Muschamp. Those 3 coaches have a combined record of 524-256. Now, keep in mind, a lot of those losses came while they were coaching @ SC. Their records are much better if you subtract their early seasons @ SC.

On the contrary, our last 3 hires have a combined record of 119-100. Do you see the issue here? South Carolina.....SOUTH CAROLINA have gone out and hired EXPERIENCED coaches, while we keep hiring Google search coaches. We're never going to compete like this. Ever. Tennessee is not a place to "cut your teeth". When you hire guys that are barely over the .500 mark, how do you expect much more than 6-6?

They're gambling. They're not investing. And they're doing it with our money. Pruitt may end up being a great coach, but if that does happen, it was luck.

Anyone else see Mike Leach (129-82) beat Stanford last night? Gundy (119-56) and Oklahoma State beat Texas? Would a Les Miles (141-55) Tennessee have lost last night? What could have been...

I guess your another poster I'm going to have to put on ignore. It's hard reading such stupidity.

I agree that our administration whiffed on the Jones hire. They screwed up royally with Dooley and last year's coaching search. But I disagree with calling JP a bad hire. We've improved a lot from last season but remember we were a 4-8 team.

And it is very likely we end up the same this year... so not sure how you count improvement but I've always felt wins and losses were the most logical way to do it.

Is there any proof that we didn’t? If not why make this post? We are better at several positions and we beat a ranked team in the road despite being grossly overmatched. Beating South Carolina would’ve been an upset. It’s obvious to everyone I’ve talked to that we are getting better. Your opinion is an outlier.

Is there any proof that Ariana Grande didn’t stay over at my place last night?

The "we deserved to win" party line is laughable. USC averaged over 6 yards a carry the entire first half. We had a lot go our way, so those focusing on the fumble/no fumble call are kidding themselves. We got away with a PI on their first FG drive, n the end zone. We did not "deserve" to win. That being said, we are pretty much right where we thought we'd be. We won at Auburn (I honestly thought we were gonna get demolished) and we lost to a bad USC team. @#$# evens out in a season. We always knew the season was essentially going to come down to Kentucky, Vandy, Missouri. I don't know how people are saying JP is the guy- there has been ZERO proof of that.

Shew, I'm glad we didn't end up with your what could been!!! You complain about what seems to be a good solid football coach for a record of a washed up has been!!! Yeah great call.. your correct what could been..... a coach with a record at another school with quality depth. Let's just stop with the moaning and belly aching and let's get behind OUR coach

Maybe we did. But do you KNOW we did? Is there any PROOF that we did?
He has elevated the roster in more ways in 10 months than butch did in his five years. If you can’t notice it then that’s not anyone else’s fault.

Correct!

Its like this... Butchie got fired and left a Chevy Chevette (2L, 4 cylinders) for Pruitt to use... well Coach has polished it, changed the oil, and put premium gas in that thing... runs a little better, but gets hammered by all those 8 cylinders in the SEC. Pruitt is trading that thing in... but has to wait for next years models to come out. SOON.
I agree with everything you said, but please I'm begging you to please don't use. "SOON" any more. I got so gosh darn sick of that word during our coaching searches it's not even funny..... I almost go into a fit when I read or hear it. Haha

We have a good coach now but all boards have posters like you. No coach would ever be good enough for some posters.

Logic supports my argument.

The fact that we beat a ranked West team in God knows how long.

The fact that we can score. How many games did we go TDless last year?

As a long time Vol fan I'm not so sure we made a great hire either. I have a great ear for how people speak and their diction and I judge them based on that. Pruitt is not a very well educated man. He might be a good football coach, but when I hear him speak I just cringe. When someone gets paid $4 million a year you don't expect things like "we done bad, aight?" Being in charge of a multi million dollar football program requires more than a high school football coach.

These guys are glorified PE coaches. Just when and I can overlook you’re bad grammer.

I’d love to get the Wrights and Pappoes of the world but it doesn’t take guys like that to be competitive. We just need smart, competitive guys with bodies that fit the 3-4.

Our biggest problem is how weak we are up the middle. Tuttle is better suited for the 4-3, but Elijah Simmons and Savion Williams are on their way. If we get some guys who can move the LOS our backers will look much better.
I gotcha. I was just replying to what another poster said about needing Ferraris.
I'd rather have a bunch of 4x4's Land Rovers that can do anything they want.

Because unlike Kirby Smart who was at ONE school for 8 years at the same position working under a legend, Pruitt worked at 3 different schools in 5 years at the same position. He’s simply not as experienced.

Pruitt was a risky hire. It may pay off, it may not. But Fulmers downfall was hiring assistant coaches. That’s ultimately what got him fired.

2...

You're right. This team is obviously very superior to last year's version. Just wish we could get the win column to reflect that.

And some would ascribe to the theory that Auburn isn't a Top 25 team. As a matter of fact the pollsters kind of make that argument. So while Aubie was was ranked I think we can safely say they were slightly over-rated.

Of course it makes some feel better to brag about something that at the time we all thought might be a big accomplishment. However, in hindsight we should be able to see it wasn't as big of a deal as it seemed at the time.

I thought this was gonna be about penalties, bad calls and bad execution.

Not some arm chair qb whining about the coaching staff again.

Yeah but most didn't get their 1st shot at a program in the SEC. A program that has at times been considered one of the best around. A program that has facilities 2nd to none. A program that is on the top 10 list in wins of all time. A program that has a rabid fan base that loves their team even when they are down. A program like the University of Tennessee.

Hope that helps some of you understand why so many of us are upset that the players and fans have to wait for the coaches to grow into their role before we start winning again. That is of course making the assumption they actually grow into the role enough to make this team competitive again.
