We are losing our younger generation

I am a teacher (6th grade), and I asked all my students who their favorite college football team is. Out of 92 students 65 picked Tennessee, so 27 students from right here in East Tennessee did not pick the Vols. This is frustrating to me and alarming. These are possible future donors and season ticket buyers. The good news is that they are kids, and kids love a winner, so if Butch can turn this thing around a lot of these kids will become Tennessee fans. He needs to hurry things up though.

6th grade. I was a "Michigan fan" in sixth grade. Trust me a lot of kids don't have their team yet. A good amount won't even care about football at all.

We don't have a worry about any Michigan fans right now at least.

The only teams I had passed down were the St. Louis Cardinals and the Missouri State Bears.

My others were picked up during the age range of 9 to 11 and they were all winners at that time and I've stuck with them.

They're kids. It happens.

I blame poor parenting. I have managed to brainwash...er, educate my kids here in TX.

I have also, 2 hours from Gainesville.. that is tough. They still don't understand why I root so hard and love my vols so much. Hopefully one day they will understand.

I would argue interest in football period may be dropping in the younger generations.

I thought that 10-15 yrs ago so I started keeping track of how many each HS has on their team. It keeps going up in TN & more & more schools are starting FB programs that never had them before. Hopefully that trend continues

Probably the wrong forum to get into this but I'll try anyway. You want to know what they teach kids about our state's contributions now:
- Andy Jackson massacred the Cherokee and beat the British at New Orleans after the war was over.
- Sam Houston massacred the Mexican Tejanos and Davy Crockett got what was coming to him.
- Alvin C York's didn't capture all those Germans by himself.

That's what the left wing will do!

I live in Indiana and my kids would not list IU, Purdue, or Notre Dame as their favorite. Unfortunately, I suspect Tennessee is #2 on the list. I married an Oregon Duck and my kids were born this century.

Both of our grandsons (16 and 12) love Tennessee and would go to every game if we would take them. The are glued to the TV when they are not at the game and TN plays.

My boys are 6,4,&2 and the two older ones know every word to Rocky Top. The baby at least has the chorus down.

Their favorite verse is the "corn from a jar" verse. I love hearing them sing it. But hell, all three of them wore UT gear home from the hospital, so I guess i just put more of an emphasis on it.

That is so cool. When I was 6,4 & 2, all I thought about was girls....and corn from a jar.

I honestly thought it would be worse. I'm kind of happy with those numbers.

Born and raised about 10 minutes north of Bristol in VA. People around here always ask me why I don't pull for the home team (VT). I always respond with " When I started getting into football UT was the home team". Ever since I watched The Miracle at South Bend on WCYBTV5 when I was 10 I've been all Vol! GBO!!!!!!!

My wife has been teaching 6th grade for over 20 years now. I wouldn't let what 6th graders think worry me too much. They'll change their mind 2 or 3 more times before they graduate, and a large number of those 27 will probably end up going to UT and rooting for the Vols. Don't sweat it.
