We are going to win the east next year!

Dude its called being optimistic. Our schedule was brutal last year and had an unbelievable amour of injuries. If healthy all year and a little easier schedule, plus guys we have coming in, especially the JUCO guys there is reason to believe we will be much improved

I'm all for optimism. I think we should be improved on both side of the ball - we no longer have the excuses of youth and depth issues.

But to have a thread titled "We are going to win the east next year!" is more than just optimism or hope for an improvement.

If you dont want georgia's schedule to look weak, maybe tennessee and florida should consider playing better football

Or playing Ala, LSU or Ark. Which I know isn't their fault but its not like they consistently schedule a good OC game. Which after Boise last year we see why. Two best teams they played last year were Boise and LSU. What happened? 2 major blowout losses.

I like the positive take. Personally I have chosen to stay positive with hopes of seeing the spark of the winning tradition back on the hill. It's been a long 5 or so years.

And how did UT fare against Bama and LSU? We held LSU to 0 first downs in the first half. We also held UT to -20 yards rushing. I bet you're one of the ones who said that UT "should have won that game". You seem like the type.

Exactly. I don't have the confidence in Dooley or Bray enough yet to say we can win the East. Neither has won a big game and lost to UK. Hard to be very confident. And if Dooley doesn't learn to make better 2nd half adjustments it won't matter. Depth can't be blamed for that ESP when youi go 5 or so straight games without a 2nd half TD, especially against MTSU. Dooley just hasn't shown proved enough to gain much confidence and hope its much improved this season.

You held us to -20 yard rushing and still only managed to beat us by a touchdown. Dominance, baby.

Sounds like your saying you guys should have beaten LSU last year, lol that's funny. LSU was extremely flat in that game they knew they were playing for the NC regardless. And no I'm not saying UT should have won any game last year that they lost. SC would have been the closest but that was clearly on the players drops, bad decision making and bad play calling. And holding us to limited rushing yards doesn't mean much Not like running was a priority, which I totally disagree with and hate.

Guys if you are not excited about this football team I can't help. We will have the best receiving core in the country, arguably the top qb in the SEC if not country, we do not lose a single offensive lineman and have plenty of depth for competition and these guys have been in this offense now for 3 years. I think we have the top offense in the SEC.
On Defense we have the defensive line that we upgraded on signing day. I will trade Jackson for McCuller and sentimore everyday of the week not to mention we have Everyone else coming back. Move on to linebacker and we lose Austin Johnson. He will be replaced by Lather who is one year removed from a 75 tackle season(upgrade). The two freshman fenom are back and will only get better. Move on to the seconday and again we lose no one. The only thing I fear is the transition to a 3-4 and if we will be set back as goergia was in 2010. Our defense kept us in games with UGA, USCjr, UF and KY.

With this being said CDD does not get my vote anymore if he can not get to at least 8 wins. He did an amazing job filling positions of need with juco players and in return his expectations are up. We may have missed on a few recruits but the ones we missed I don't think would have had an effect on the win loss column anyway. Anything less than a 9 win season next year and I will be disappointed. By the way I predicted a 6 win season this year and I also think if we are lucky enough to not lose any players to the draft after next year I think we make a run at the NC in 13. Go vols! I personally think we are now BACK!

Post went into the insanity file when you said you would trade an All SEC D tackle (M.Jackson) for a 380 lb 3 star juco D tackle not to mention T. Bray being the best QB in the SEC if not the country. T. Bray has the potential but he hasn't done anything yet except pad his stats agaist weak teams. At least we have the two freshman "fenom". How could you even type NC in 13 with a straight face? Your delusional

Whoever thinks at this point that the Georgia game is a toss up isn't thinking realistically....everyone on here just thinks that Freshman are going to come in and play like All Americans right off the bat. That will no doubt happen with a few of our recruits but still....UGA is way ahead of us from a development standpoint. They won 10 straight games last year...we barely won ten in 2 years. Face reality people. That said....I hope we go to Athens and TB has 400 yards and 10 TDs all to different recievers/Justin Meredith.

Who are the freshmen that we will be depending on this year like we were last year? Seriously.

GA ans SC aren't going to go beat anyone if games turn into trackmeets.

Why say that about UGA? They finished in the top-4 in the SEC in scoring offense (again), return their QB and all but 1 of their key skill players, were balanced in their offense, and have a team with more top-tier talent and depth than us. South Carolina loses Jeffrey, a big loss, but also gets back Lattimore, and returns a lot of players on an offense that averaged 30 points a game last year, 10 points more than we did.

A reminder...

Bray vs. SEC
51% 15 TD 12 INT

Murray vs. SEC
58% 31 TD 14 INT

Shaw vs. SEC
64% 6 TD 5 INT

So now that you have inserted "sanity", tell us what your legitimate expectations are. Developing your own hypothesis is much more difficult than just shooting holes in someone's theory.

And that's why you're disappointed every year. Best WRs in the country? good but no where close to the best in the country. Best QB in the SEC? Again not even close. Before he's considered to be the best he has to beat a team with a winning record in the SEC, which he hasn't done yet. UT is getting better but still has a ways to go. Being excited about getting better is good, over rating players leads to disappointment.

When you don't play the 3 best teams during the regular season your numbers are going to look good. Plus when they played Boise and LSU in the champ game their offense didn't do much. Hell they struggled against us offensively. No great Wrs and so far no RB. That was my point in saying that. Plus on Bray I don't think he's top 3 in the SEC right now. Potential he has the biggest upside but he's got alot of work to do

Ut will have the best Wrs in the SEC and some of the best in the nation. That's been mentioned places outside of VN. How many teams will have two 5*, four 4* receivers? I'm guessing not many if any. Now QB we do have alot of work to be done and I'm not sure Peterman may not be the best of the 3 before its said and done.

Good post. I'm not saying that UT won't beat us this year, but I don't think it'll be with 400 yds. from Bray. Our D should be much improved over last season with one more 3-4 season under our belts. That's the point that some can't or won't understand. You can't change coaches/schemes and expect immediate results. Your D will suffer this season. So you're gonna have to put up a lot of points on a lot of teams. Very well may happen. I'm not the smartest guy in the world (I think I'm ranked 4th or 5th or something like that):whistling:

We lost our 2 top running backs in the offseason and started a freshman, who was hurt most of the season. Lack of running game really showed in the Boise St. and LSU games (plus SEVERAL key dropped passes against LSU) We should be a lot better in the running game this year. We'll see.

I feel like there's an assumption in this thread that we are making a wholesale switch to a 3-4 defense.

Dooley has said that we will be "multiple." Not to mention our staff probably anticipated an easier transition w Santos and Otha on board.... I don't think you'll see us come out 1st play vs NC State in 3-4

This has been a very entertaining thread, with all the jabbing back and forth with our SEC brethren. I love the Vols as much as the next fan however lets be truthful to ourselves. Yea we lost Hunter, Bray, and arguably the best DB when J Jackson was let go. There were several of the games that we lost, having Bray and Hunter may have not made that much of a difference.

Everyone wants to say how great Hunter is and how he was our best WR, truth is he only played in three games. Of all the games Hunter and Da'rick played in, Da'rick had more catches and touchdowns than Hunter. Hunter had more yards than Da’rick, but it takes touchdowns to win ballgames. Before you bash me on Hunter, I am not saying that he is not a stud, just not sold on him being the best wide out that we have. If you think about what Da’rick accomplished with him constantly being double covered and without Hunter, it could be said that Da’rick was the better wide out. It would have been scary to see what he could have done with Hunter and Bray there the entire season. Even without those two, Da’rick still managed to be all SEC, not too bad.

That being said, our problems last year was much more than injuries. We lacked a RBs Coach, Kicker/Punter Coach and most importantly a team playing with the desire or confidence to win every game. We have hopefully fixed the Coaching problems with our new hires and the attitude problem, well that is to be determined. This year’s team has all the talent in the world and if they can get that winning/no quit attitude, the SEC had better watch out.
