We are an 8-4 program

We were 10-2 our Championship year in 98 without a couple of miracle, improberable comebacks that we lucked into.

The same could be said for every national championship team ever. You don't luck into championships.

2nd tier programs should still be competing for championships when their division sucks and they have the oldest, most talented team, with experience on both lines and a senior QB.

Now we're talking about coaching issues. Butches failures don't make this less of a program. But if he continually does this, he isn't going anywhere.

Everything indicates this. UT will be 8-4 or 9-3 most years and be ranked 10-20th. Historically all time we are 9th (using AP poll). In modern football 80s-current we are 14th all time. I'm not defending Butch, he should have beat 2 of the 4 teams we lost to off of talent alone, but thinking that 8 wins next season does anything but grant him a contract extension is dilusional.

Thanks. I was still skeptical after the first 20 threads that said this but after this one im certain and all the sudden excited about a sloppy poorly coached team that wins 8 games and loses to Vandy. Sweet.

Link me to another thread that discusses our programs historic performance and uses it as a basis for why we're being unrealistic.

From 80s to present who is in top 10? Youve already mentiones Mich, OSU, bama...who else?

Why are, in your opinion, are some fans unable to accept the historical reality of our program...where did the delusion originate?

It depends on the specific line of criticism you are talking about.

With regards to this season specifically, the historical context of our program is irrelevant. The SEC East was there for the taking. Once that faded a Sugar Bowl berth was there for the taking, and we gagged away both.

You are correct about those in our fanbase that, for some reason, think a playoff berth should be an expectation or possibility every year. Those people are delusional.

Identity reflects attitude. Alabama was garbage for some years winning less than 5 games a year. We never will accept mediocrity.

It was almost a decade ago that Bama brought in Saban. We've had a pretty good coaching sample size in that time to say otherwise,

Tennessee will not under any circumstance hire a top tier coach. Unless Blackburn is hired, there's no reason to hope that things are going to get better in the future. There's only a handful of coaches in the country that can compete with Nick Saban and guess what? They're all pretty much settled at the big time schools such as Ohio St., Clemson, Michigan.. You know why? Because their administration actually puts in the work to make sure they hire coaches whom they know will bring success to the their programs. We've been through Dooley and now Butch. Diamond in the rough type of coaches are risky but we tend to take the risk every damn time and it has gotten us nowhere but continuous mediocrity. Until our administration learns to start paying up cash to bring in big time coaches, we'll be stuck winning 7 or 8 games year & year out. You might as well forget winning championships.

Agree with much you posted. Especially who can compete with the the Sabans of CFB.
One avenue we may use to circumvent is hiring proven coordinators and assistants and promoting from within. Worked well with Phil.
