a non-profit and showing no profit are 2 different things

That is because we turn the profit we get back into scholarships (both athletic and non-athletic) as well as fund various other university projects and athletic facility upgrades. If I'm not mistaken, UT is one of the few self-sustaining athletic departments in the nation, meaning that they cover all of their expenses and have money left over to give back to the university each year.

This has probably got a lot to do with Fulmer's buyout?

This sounds bunk to me. So if I contribute a dollar, will we be in the black?

How does this come about and is it beneficial to the teams and University?

If I recall, the AD makes a substantial profit, but they donate a large margin to scholarship funds (not just athletic but academic, etc) to the University proper.

I don't know what to think about this. Florida's profit is almost the same as Kentucky.

how many of these are self-sustaining and how many get state money? Also, I find it odd that USC reports at all

I can't imagine this is an apples to apples comparison because of all the various ways the schools fund (or not) the athletic departments.

For one thing, it would be neat to see the average ticket price for football and basketball for all of these schools. I bet some of the tix are more than double the average price on good ole Rocky Top.

Kentucky basketball has been much more successful historically than Florida football...and they're close to being comparable again now, with Kentucky basketball probably moving ahead again starting next year.

no, I believe it simply means one more dollar would go back to the university.

I noticed that the athletic department's budget has soared up over $100M, but barely makes a few millions dollars every year. 3% return on investment? Pathetic. The average annual inflation is 5%, so the athletic department is actually losing money. WTF Mike?

Those numbers mean absolutely nothing, without the story behind them. A team with no profit, might be spending millions in development, renovation, etc. While the team with 25 million in profit might have that much profit because they spend absolutely nothing.
