WBIR's Steve Phillips just reported on his sports segment that Volquest is reporting that UT signee Rae Sykes has not qualified academically and will most likely enroll in Coffeyville Jr. College, same place Walter Fisher attended and former UT signee Dustin Lindsey is currently attending.

This was, however, expected to happen, as most thought Sykes would struggle to get in academically.

I dont see how any of those guys from Alcoa could qualify...no offense to any of them...but it seems like most of the guys out of there are either not gonna qualify or just barely make it in...My GF told me that when she took the ACT that Rae was in there and he just breezed thru it and put his head down and went to sleep...

We are talking about two young men from two different recruiting classes. It is a little disappointing to here that Rae seemed disinterested while taking the ACT. Alcoa is a good school and unfortunately not all students take advantage of the opportunities that they have while in high school. I'm sure that academic priorities will change in the future with Coach Rankin at Alcoa. Good talent for a high school with less than 400 students.

They have more than 500 students. I have a friend that goes there. Alot of their talent doesnt live in the Aloca area but use a home address in that area. Some just go there to play football.

schdir - Detail

Alcoa had 386 enrolled students this year.

Thanks for the correction to the erroneous 500 students HV. The senior class has less than 100 students.

Let's throw a few more facts out to eliminate some of the confusion of some of the posters. Alcoa City Schools have an open enrollment policy just like the rest of Blount County. The students that live out of area have to pay tuition to attend school. It's not like athletes are pouring in to the school from all over. If that was the case the enrollment would be much higher than 400.

If these athletes were just going to Alcoa to play sports, why not go to Maryville? They win state championships also and get more publicity from the local and national media. Yet, two years ago Alcoa won against the eventual state champion in 3A and last year they won a game against the eventual DII champion and played the 4A champion and 3A champion to 3 point contests. This accomplished for the most part with fewer and smaller athletes.

To go back to an earlier point I tried to make... now that Coach Rankin is at Alcoa some of the players will be more academically prepared to take on the rigors of a college education.

how is the HOPE scholarship making it harder for people to get in?..That just gives you a little bit of money to go towards school

More applicants means they are being more selective in whom they accept. The average ACT score for the freshmen class has risen sharply every year since the HOPE scholarship was started. Of course this is for non-athletes though.
