Watching Last Year's OU-A&M Game On ESPNU...

Okay, let's consider this. It is UT vs UF and same situation. We go for it and a Gator defender blows through the line and blows the play up. UF holds on to the ball and kicks a last second FG to win. You know as well as I do that every UT fan in the world would be calling him an idiot and talking about how horrible he is at making big decisions. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

I agree with hat and think his main point is not to always do this but that Fulmer NEVER would do this. When was the last time he did something surprising that the other team didn't anticipate?

We want to see an SEC title every 5 years or so, that is all. We have 2 in the last decade, and 0 in the last 8 years, and are showing no signs of improving our chances.

I think the last 8 words of your post are what people care about most - it's wanting to be excited about what's happening right now.

Last time I was truly surprised was when he went for it on 4th down @ Miami.

Do your research. UT has gone for it on 4 and short many times. We did it last year. Look and you will find it. But then again since it isn't another coach other than Fulmer it is easier to just post stupid comments.
It depends on the situation if you go for it or not.

We lost the '99 and '00 Florida games after failing to convert short yardage situations with a run late in the game. And that was with Jamal Lewis and Travis Henry.

the situation itself that is being discussed is not the real issue. is it the right or wrong call? well, many times, the end result dictates that. it's a great call if it works, it's a bone head call if it doesn't.

the real issue to me is the attitude we have going in to games. and it's not like this always, but we do have a tendency to go in to games with a game plan that does not force the issue offensively sometimes. we have a general philosophy we want to follow, and in merit, i have no issue with it.

but when it does come down to either playing it safe or put your foot on thier throat, we tend to play it safe.

even in the past when we have gone for it or whatever, many times, those situations are in reaction to what is going on, not us being the aggressor.

simply going for it on 4th down or whatever isn't the issue. it's the situations we get ourselves in to that dictate what we do, rather than us dictating what situatinos we want to be in.

and it hasn't always been that way, and nor is it always that way.

but there have been specific points over the years in big games etc....that this has reared it's ugly head, and that's what i want to change.

it's like the FL game this year.....so many unknowns on their D and their Offense with how Tebow and the newbies are going to be as full time contributors.....what will we do? wait and see how they do things? or are we going in being the ones who dicate pace, tempo, strategy? i.e. make them play our game vs. see what they do and try to react to it.

excellent post, I've thought this many times is the root problem of the slow steady decline in the past 10 years.

the FL game in the 90's and the Bama games in the 80s seemed to always play out this way in my opinion. by the time we had anything figured out, it was too late.

the best example i can think of where we put our foot on the accelorator and didn't let up was the 95 Bama game and the 92 FL game.....put'em in our rear view and didn't look back. would like to see more of that, even if doesn't always work. and to be honest, i think we have made some effort at that, even recently, but the plays simply weren't made.......1st half of 05 LSU game comes to mind......how many big drops were on that 1st half.......in that game, and several others, i honestly didn't think it was anything but lack of performance that did us in.

then couple that with turnovers and penalties.......and you get a culmination of the last 3 years......

anyway, i just don't get the feeling lately that we are establishing anything other than we want to run the ball.....which i don't have a problem with......but we do it sometimes just because that's what we do........neverending cycle..........ugh.

hoping that changes in the very near future.

I remeber the Miami fans booed and I was gettin mad but after I saw the replay I was not sure if it was a good call.
