How does the defense stack up this year compared to last year?

I haven't been keeping up with the offseason as much as normal.

Last years defense was special.

Also, not as worried about Nico leaving.

If we can stop allowing 6 to 10 minute drives against our toughest competition which then limits our out of rhythm offense to 4 possessions in a half we will be better as a whole. I go back to Arky where we were bad on offense and especially at qb and defense kept us in the game but we gave up a near 7 minute drive to start the game which zaps energy and rhythm and adrenaline from kickoff has come and gone.
And don’t drop Josephs 15 yards deep in coverage on 3rd and 7.

True. The defense last year was legit very talented.

With an average offense last year, the team looks way more dominant.

I still doubt they beat Ohio State.

Talent wise, how do you think the defense compares to last years team?

I think it’s better, more experienced and more athletic but have to see how safety plays out as Brooks knew how to play and Turrentine got turned around a couple times pretty easily. I haven’t seen enough of Farooq.
Cbs are solid down to 5th-6th man.

Last years D was so elite I worry how it could be as good, but hopefully it will be. I have faith in CTB but still struggle to trust CWM and the secondary.
The thing with Nico is- what would be your opinion of him if he weren't a 5* and all you had to judge him by was his college resume? He rarely looked confident in the pocket. Seemed indesisive. Missed how many open receivers? He seemed to get credit only for his reputation not his results.

Honestly, I would call Nico a less-than-average SEC QB last year. I felt that way almost all season.

Def not elite but it was really good until Pili got hurt, then it just became good. Problem is Banks gets scared shítless against the best teams, and Willie Martinez has in his contract that he has to cost the team at least one game per season.
Agree about Banks, Martinez is a good coach, safety play has not been good and Banks coaches safeties

I’d say we were an elite defense last year at 🏠 and solid on the road. We were #7 in points allowed and that includes the Ohio State debacle. First 8 games of the year we didn’t allow 20 points.

maybe we give up more ppg this year but hopefully we can force more turnovers. If we play with a lead, teams will have to take chances which will hopefully lead to sacks/turnovers

Our D should still be good this year

Our strength is probably going to change this year though. Last year, our strongest part was our line but we lost a great deal there. Safety and DB look to be our strong parts this season.

We're nowhere near a playoff team this year. This is gonna be kinda like 2023, 8-4 type season where we essentially maintain par

Special was Desert Swarm. Maybe even the Wrecking Crew.

We could be comparable to last year or slightly better which is a quality defense.

I keep having to say.
There's a reason for the offensive overhaul this WHOLE off-season.

You all saw it but still put it soly on Nico. That dude left and became the starter somewhere else immediately.

- Nicos dad knew the offense ITSELF was a problem. As did most anybody that coached football. GREED messed him and- by default his son - up. That was the leverage and fat daddy over played his hand. Heupel said " okay you're right, but you're a PITA. BYE!"
Heupel did the right thing, but you people just don't get it...there was an issue with the offense itself. You keep saying "Halzel holding back" O-line was trash, Nico missed " blah blah

....The offense was good until they matched up with defenders who could win in 1 v 1 battles with the offense. And being that it was SO PREDICTABLE, that led to.oppising defenses winning a lot.
- Plays Quaters defense and have at least 6 men in the box and BOOM you stop the 2023 and 2024 offense with SEC defenders.

- No shifting
- No using the whole field to open up plays
- no misdirection
- not enough variation
- throwing a 9 route to 4.8 speed Bru McCoy???? SERIOUSLY HALZLE???

Last year defense was good. Not elite
Top 10 in all major defensive categories is not elite? Only SEC team higher in total defense was Texas. So we were better than Georgia's, Alabama's, LSU's, and Florida's defenses so if we're not elite they must suck.

How many times did we just go 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out, and just run that D back out there? Played the entire first half of the Florida game in plus territory thanks to the D and got 0 points. Went Scoreless in the first half against Bama and turned it over 3 times yet held the Tide to just 7. Time and time again the D kept us in big ball games, yes indeed that was an elite D!

You nailed it, our offense got noted as one of the P4 teams with the most scoreless TDs in the first half in 2024. It you looked at just our Offenses production in a vacuum, it would be hard to believe they were a 10 win team.

That’s what I mean. The Bama and Florida games certainly stick out last season as both were at 🏠 I would say we were elite last year. The OSU and UGA games you could say were outliers but I still wish we had kept the scores lower against those teams.

That roughing the passer against OSU really hurt and not saying we’d have won the game but momentum in college 🏈 is certainly a real thing as is confidence

Why was the offense elite in 2021 and 2022? Was it not because we had an elite QB?

My 2 cents

Defense will be as good, but maybe not as deep on the line especially with Hobbs out for a few weeks so less rotation. Linebackers and DB’s have a chance to be elite.

Offense will all be predicated on qb/wr play. More rotation on the backs but should get equal production, TE’s should be better, offensive line should be better.

Speaking of games last year, I wonder what would have happened if we didn’t get that penalty on 3rd and we stopped OSU on the first drive of the game.
