Watched my first HD DVD

Is it THAT noticeable of a difference from an upscaling DVD player? I'm a big fan of HD, but have been skeptical of how much of a difference HD-DVD or Blu-Ray would be on an HDTV over a DVD in a top end dvd player.

That said, I hear that MI:III is one of the most impressive looking HD-DVDs out.

We were Soliders was better than the orignal, but King Kong that came with the 360 HD player was great! I will stop and get MI:III if Wally World has a copy.

I'm happy with regular DVD's... I saw a HD-DVD display at Best Buy. They're nice, but not that much nicer than a higher-end DVD player, like Wemus said, and they're a lot cheaper.

I think the price of the media combined with the restricted ways to output in true HD will keep me in the throes of standard DVD for a few more years.

I would imagine they look pretty good. I don't buy movies, so no real use in me getting one yet. Plus, I'll have the PS3 on Friday so I guess I'll be watching BluRay movies before HDDVDs. Blockbuster down the road doesn't have either, so I doubt I'll be seeing many of either kind any time soon.

That's what I'am saying, it's like the HD channels on cable I only get like 7-10 HD channels and most of those have crappy shows. I'll keep my 360 and see how this thing pans out before spending the money on a HDDVD add on.

Most of the HD channels that cable offers can be gotten OTA with an ATSC tuner and antenna. Of course, I still think ESPNHD and ESPN2HD make it all worth it to get the cable option.

CBS, through the past 2 NCAAs and most of their football games are lacking in the HD department. They have more problems in the pictures, some of which can be attributed to the amount of data they are sending out. It's not even close to a 1080i picture in resolution on some of their live stuff. Their evening primetime programming is a different story and typically is very good (CSI, 2.5 Men, etc.).

ESPN has the best live broadcasts along with ABC and the Duece. Then again, your getting more of the picture (talking datawise here) and a 720p picture which typically performs a bit better when in motion.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be happy watching any of them. Love the HD set I've got. I just think some ould use better live broadcasting. CBS looses focus and become a bit gritty way too often suggesting they could use better equipment somewhere in their system.

SportsCenter on ESPN might be the best HD programming going. I think it's fantastic the production they put into that show.

Interesting that you would say that ABC live broadcasts are on par with ESPN. I've yet to see it...

While I'll disagree with you on the CBS SEC game of the week, I WILL agree that CBS needs to get more/better HD equipment for other games. I don't remember ever seeing them broadcast a Titans game in HD.

I was thinking about that the other day. I wonder if it's a matter of the Titans not buying the equipment needed. There are always a few games not in HD, but I haven't bothered to see if it's the same stadiums. Wouldn't surprise me if the gear is just left there all season long, perhaps even provided by the team or the NFL or combo. Might be the market size, etc. Anyone familiar with how broadcasting equipment is done with NFL, etc.?

I finally see the issues you have been talking about on CBS, DrRosen. It is something I have never noticed on my dad's projection TV but is very obvious on my CRT. I think it is the cameras that CBS is using, as the graphics and stationary video still look great. I think the cameras are slow to adjust focus, or maybe interlacing as you have spoken of... that said, my TV doesn't support 720p, only 1080i.

Yeah, I think it's either the focus on their cameras, or the equipment they are using to transmit the signals. I don't think it's necessarily an interlacing problem since you're getting it on a 1080i set and it's visible on 720p sets. CBS broadcasts in 1080i but not all signals are created equal. Could be drops in quality for numerous reasons.

BTW, I get the same stuff with their b-ball and march madness coverage. That's the biggest reason I think it's in their systems between the camera and your set.

Do you get it from the graphics? The graphics such as the logo and the text and stuff look great for me.
