This is actually a bit of a myth due to the optics involved. Bolt is fast as hell at every stage of a sprint. When he ran his 9.58 he ran the fastest split even at 20m. I believe the only person to even match Bolt at 40m was Michael Green.

That may be but it's just weird because every race I watched it looked like Gatlin blew his doors off out of the gate only to have Bolt cruise past him down the stretch.

One of the tricky things about track racing is there are actually two "starts". The timing starts at the starter sound regardless of what the runners do. Imagine if The Flash just sat there in the blocks for 9 seconds then crossed the finish line in 10 seconds. What did he run, a 10 second 100m or a 1 second 100m? Technically, he did both. As far as the "race" is concerned he had a 10 second run but as far as he was "timed" he ran a 1 second hundred meters with a 9 second reaction time.

What this means in the real world is getting out of the blocks in relation to the start is a micro race in and of itself. When Bolt ran that 9.58 his RT was a .146. There's nothing remotely special about that time and in fact Richard Thompson had a .119. If Bolt had that RT the WR would be a 9.55 instead of a 9.58. Note that even though Bolt didn't even hit his blocks (literally start running) until several others had already started Bolt still posted a faster 20m split. Yeah...he is (or more honestly was) that fast.

Every race is different and in any given race he (or anyone) can have a poor start. I have no doubt Bolt has been behind at the start of some races but is so fast though he can almost always make up the difference. Why all this matters in the 40 discussion is the lack of a runner RT in a 40. The runner takes off when they're ready. Bolt, in his prime anyway, simply possessed a level of speed we've never seen before and it may be awhile before we see again.

Yes sir, especially in, I believe the 2015 World Championships, Gatlin had him smoked in the 40 and even in the 80, until Bolt walked him down in the last 20 meters. Announcer and former Olympian, Boldin, said, Gatlin got too excited and lost his form, in that last 20 meters

Line up and run a 40 yard dash straight down the field 30 times a game, catch 2 a game and get drafted in the first round.

Renaldo Neamiah of the SF 49ers was another great track star turned football player. Believe he was a hurdle runner, tho

Oh yeah, Bo Jackson, I know ran the 100 at Auburn and I am pretty sure Herschal Walker did the same at Georgia. But, those 2 were different animals, football 1st and track 2nd. Of course, I guess, with Bo, it was FB 1st, baseball 2nd, track 3rd. Damn, he is the greatest athlete in my lifetime. Shame, it all happened, in a blink of the eye
