When watching a game live, it's easy to just watch the ball and not see specific players or player groups. I'm just now watching the replay from last night and am watching based on some comments I've been reading since last night. The 1st is were we playing vanilla or not. Based on how few different plays and formations we used, I think yes. The whole team probably underestimated ASU.
Next is how bad the coaching is. These are the same coaches that called plays for about 400 ypg last year, so it was not the play calling. The offensive line played bad, but I thought they actually blocked better on passing plays than running plays. And now the biggie!!! Dobbs passing game has not improved. Running vanilla playbook does not influence how well the called passes are thrown. I think the passing game will definately cost the VOLS a game or two this year, if not more. There will always be the argument about whether Dobbs is the MAN or not. I personally think Dobbs is a great athlete but not sure he provides the best chance for this team to win tough games. I understand he had some big plays last year but his 650 rushing yards is only about 50 ypg. Easy to gain that back with only 2 - 4 medium passes per game. After watching the game again, give you honest thoughts.

You have to remember that Dobbs is real streaky... Which makes watching him causes a lot of drinking

Its always easier to go back and be more critical, Dobbs was asked to stay in the pocket, and that is not his natural place, his legs are part of his game, that should have been left alone........they tried to make a dual threat and Pro Style passer........that is not who he is. I believe the coaching staff believed our OL could hold back App State's DL, and the play book got burned 2 seconds after the end of the game........let Dobbs be Dobbs.

The thing with Dobbs is that you can't let him think. He's like Johnny Manziel except not quite as athletic and with a functioning brain off of the football field.

Manziel would freeze up and make errant throws when he didn't move out of the pocket. You couldn't ask him to think and read defenses because he's almost purely an instinctual player. I think Dobbs is really similar.

It is time that everybody just accept that Dobbs is not a great passer. I'm not sure why people were expecting massive improvement between a junior and senior season. By the time these guys are juniors and seniors, it's pretty much WYSIWYG.

Im all for Dobbs with his career.

But im not sure he put the time in this offseason with his wrs to get better. Imo

It is what it is.

I started to watch it again... started getting sick to my stomach again, so i turned it off, just couldnt do it..

Just imagine how sick you'd be if we lost. I liked watching that "Tennessee Vols in 60" show on ESPN over the summer, but would flip the channel when the Oklahoma and Florida games came up.

Just re watched it. I must say it was much easier knowing the outcome. I was freaking out last night!! Positives are there though, pass protection was better, receivers ran better routes. Richmond looks capable. I'm glad the defense didn't fall apart. The main thing is the d didn't give up but if not for Sutton intercepetion and vereen TFL we probably lose yesterday. I hope the team and coaches learn from this one.

Tennessee is one of the very few, if not the only Power 5 team in the country, that doesn't have its QB and WRs do 7 on 7 in the summer time.

Dobbs had no time to throw and I think the coaches are often too conservative in what they call for him in the passing game. As mentioned...he can be streaky. We have all seen him do well throwing the ball and seen him do poorly. He'll never do it consistently if the coaches don't give him the chance. I think Dobbs has always looked good throwing to the middle of the field...but the play calling gives him few chances to do that. He's not an excellent passer but has the ability to be a good passer if given enough opportunities to develop the consistency he needs. Hard to do when you've got Hurd and Kamara...but that Ohio game is a good time to air it out.

I watched it again and wish I didn't. This play happens oh so often. He has plenty of time and freaks out because his only read didn't pan out and the play goes dead. That's the thing I don't like about Dobbs. He knows the person he is throwing to before the ball is even snapped and that sucks. That's not a quarterback. If your first read don't pan out you look around and find an open man. This will cost us games

dobbs went to 3 qb camps in the offseason including mannings...he is what he is.

not sure I can watch it again...like many, I was disappointed the way our guys played. Maybe App ST is really better than anyone wants to believe...only time will tell if that is true, but our VOLS should have manhandled them.

One thing for sure, the OL needs to man up. And, if you really want to put yourself through it and rewatch....look at the passing game. Dobbs is way too predictable - in that, he stares down the receiver he is going to throw to....my son looked at me after about 3 passes and said the SEC D's will eat his lunch if that doesn't change.

Hope they do make adjustments, if not....we're all going to be very disappointed this year and punishing kidneys every weekend.

I didn't see him hardly have time to look past the 1st receiver. OL has to get fixed before the can help Dobbs.

Not sure about physically slower, but he looked like his decision making was just a beat too slow. Like, he would wait just. Split second too long to break out of the pocket, and he never had a chance to get away. Or his throws were coming out slower after a long wind-up. He seemed to be thinking too much. That HAS to be coaching, right?

Staring down his receivers is killing him also, if you're only able to hit one read you have to use your eyes to lead defenders off of the wr then look back right as you throw. Day one stuff not 4th year senior

Dobbs doesn't read the defense or his receivers. He knows who he is throwing to before the ball is snapped. If his first read doesn't work out he freaks out and is either sacked or makes a horrible decision.
