Was Racism The Reason?

There will always be whites who prefer to be with whites and blacks who prefer to be with blacks. Nothing really wrong with it unless it leads to a divide and lowering of team morale, which it did. In the early 2000's a lot of UT's "teams" played like a bunch of talented individuals and got beat by lesser teams. This did not happen in the mid to late 90's.

This is one of the reasons why I love Dooley recruiting kids who are intelligent and have lots of character. You won't see this happen as much with guys like that.

It is natural to gravitate toward a group of people that you feel comfortable with or that is the same race as you. But to see a football team Segrigated (did I spell that right?) off the field is is not natural IMO. How can you be a team and you don't associate with other races on your team? That is crazy!! If you can't work together off the field you can't work together on the field and win. I think coach Dooley is tring to make things right and bring team unity back to Tennessee. Even nick reviez said after the brawl that us older guys need to start associating with those younger guys. I believe things will get better.

I just read an article in Knoxnews about Phil Simms's relationship with Chris and Matt. Someone posted a comment that the reason Chris didn't come to UT was because he felt there was a racial division on the team. My understanding is that Chris didn't come to UT because Casey Clausen got here in time for spring practice and he was afraid of the competition.

Not that it matters anymore, but anyone remember what happened? Just curious. Thanks.:hi:
Chris did make that type statement after a visit here. Something to the effect of there was a racial divide between black and white players. Something along the lines, that they would not hang out together off the field, and he was not comfortable with that.

Chris Simms left because David Cutcliffe let. I will always believe that.

Honestly I think Chris Simms picked Texas over UT because the marijuana in Texas is cheaper and easier to find.

Is there a large demand for marijuana at UT? Im just thinking of the old supply and demand curve. This might explain a few things that has happened of late.

I think Mack Brown promised Simms playing time as a freshman which he did get and was not fair to Major Applewhite. To CPF's credit I think he told Simms he would have to come out and earn the right to play and the promise sounded better. I will always believe this due to Applewhite being screwed around with in my opinion.

Why start a whole thread on racism? If there is a problem now then the team and Dooley will deal with it. If it was years ago then it needs to be let go. Rumors being posted just makes the school look bad.

Years ago I heard that racism was the reason. I knew a few managers on the football team, one of them being John Chavis's son. What I heard was that Simms came in for a few visits, and that when he saw the football sitting down to eat, the whites and blacks did not sit with each other or interact with each other. There was also supposedly some racial motivated taunting and fights going on the football field at the time too, which almost always ended up being blacks vs whites. One of the fights I was told about had something to do with Eric Parker making a huge play and then going up to the white defender and saying, "you're no match for me cause you're white" or something to that affect, which resulted in a near brawl. I wasn't there and saw none of this, but my source was extremely reliable. TIFWIW

Who won the fight?

Most people would be VERY surprised and shocked if they heard the things that were said on a football field. It's mostly just boys being boys, pushing each other. To most, it's a great way to let out some aggression.
