Was Peytons Pro Day bad?

Iirc Manning didn’t have the best pro day and as a result the Colts started to lean Leaf. They had a meeting just before the draft with Manning where Manning was quoted telling them “If you don’t select me, I’m going to spend the next 15 years kicking your asses.” That quote was what sealed the deal of who they wanted of the two. The rest is history.

As I remember it through the clouds of memory. His wonderlic score wasn't what was expected with his cerebral reputation which gave the talking heads something to debate. His throws were wobbly in front of scouts compared to RLs. He had happy feet in the pocket. He was smaller, hadn't beat Florida, couldn't throw as far as RL. Kiper, to keep people listening and watching, kept spinning ideas that he could drop out of the T5, maybe even T10 because Leaf was so amazing. Insinuated that teams wanted to trade up to get Leaf before the Chargers. After that, I learned all I needed about Kiper. He has zero clue. You could listen to Ozzy mumbling and get an equal opinion on draft selections.

In the end, it turned out as the non advertising driven people expected. Manning first, Chargers take Leaf.

He also had some "Rumors" around him about being childish.

Kiper was on the radio talking about Peytons Pro Day this morning. Said it was a disaster and that one executive remarked “ he only stayed in the first round because of his last name”. Does anyone else remember anything about this? I don’t remember where I was that day but thought that the reviews were pretty favorable that night.
I've seen interviews with Bill Polian (who made the first pick on behalf of the Colts), and he didn't describe it that way at all. He even said that Peyton Manning was a better athlete than he was being given credit for. This looks like hyperbole.

Fair enough. I never really thought it sounded right.

I don't doubt that he could have been off that day, but a disaster? That is probably hyperbole. He wouldn't have been drafted #1 if that was true. NFL GM's don't care about anyone's last name. Was Michael Munoz drafted? Nope.

Don’t remember, but that opinion wasn’t that crazy at the time. Leaf was bigger and had the better arm.

I remember that was the big debate and I remember an interview with Peyton telling Polian “If you don’t draft me #1, every time I play the Colts I’m going to kick your ass.”

I’d say the Colts made the right choice. It’s also good to see Leaf with his life in order now .

Whatever, Mel...he WILL BE a first ballot HOFer.

I put about as much credibility on twenty-year-old re-speculation as the rest of you. I’m sure Mel remembers the facts exactly after that amount of time.

Negahunters and whine hunters are always gonna hunt for something to be negative or whine about. Poop stirrers gonna hunt for both poop and a stirring stick, if they can't find a stick they'll use the fingers. Least that's what Raddie, the birdseed stealing raccoon who often visits my backyard told me.

Not sure we have combines anyways. Pop in the film and watch. I swear I can tell if someone is fast or has quick hips by watching film. Kinda blown out of proportion. Also, I think it's like herding cattle. Bring in bunches of athletes, throw a number on them and rate them. Always feel weird watching it so I stopped like 8 years ago.

Kiper might be an idiot.

Upon further review, this has been confirmed.
Kipper found a niche when there really wasn’t one and has made a living doing it. If you or I or probably 75% of the posters on this site, were afforded the time to break down film for 8-10 hours per day, have access to NFL scouts and GM’s and be compensated for it, we could do the same thing Kipwr does and be just as good at it.
GBO!!

I never got it with him but I guess he tapped into this draft thing early and became the go to guy although the real experts (teams$$$) often think he's way off. Of course the 1st round is pretty easy most mock drafts are close or a few picks off by everyone.
He does have a Dynamic hairdo though, he should own a hair spray company named " Straight outta the Seventies". Maybe get in on black KIWI shoe polish endorsements too. Good for shoes & Hair too.

NFL draft is a little dirty. Teams will float “anonymous” sources saying anything from “Team x isn’t impressed “ or “he has a injury Team Y is concerned about” or even “player Z has a history of drug issues most don’t know”. See Cornelius Bennett and Dan Marino as two examples of the last trick.

Good thing Dan didn’t have a drug issue after being drafted by Miami in the early 80’s .

Peyton has had his detractors and haters his whole record setting, NFL MVP, Super Bowl winning career. So when his multi million dollar self is standing on the tee at Pebble Beach or Innisbrook or Saint Andrews, I sincerely doubt he gives a tinkers damn about any of their opinions. He has the respect of his coaches, teammates and his opposing coaches and players and I'm pretty sure that's all that matters to him.
Well said.

I’m 50/50 with ya. I agree because players are so different when the bullets are flying vs routes on air. Especially qbs. A lot of qbs find it boring unless they are being rushed and WRs are being covered and the result is they will appear less accurate than they are on film. Others can “wow” you in a combine setting however they lose a bit of the “wow” factor when a defense is coming after him.
Imo Combines are good to test max arm strength, 40 times and explosion among other things but at the end of the day they only show you a more calculated result of who’s the better athlete. I vaguely remember (I believe) Peyton himself referring to the qb position saying “Not all qbs are athletes” “I’m possibly the least athletic qb in the league” and I couldn’t agree more because he beat you with his mind.

Yup hindsight is 20/20 but back then there was a valid argument on which was 1 and which was 2. Leaf had prototypical physical tools and numbers Peyton had great everything. His intangibles and decision making and work either were things that could be measured. he was great in College but when Tom Moore let him loose with that offense he became a legend. Cut is a great QB coach but Peyton was a once a generation type of guy.

Between him and Tom Brady I guess that tells us all we need to know about NFL pro days
