Was Jackson's hit clean?

Did Janzen Jackson show all out effort to help win or did he make a "thuggish" play?

You keep asking the same questions which I have already explained.

The reason that the ref called unnecessary roughness was because "the hit was above the shoulders" which it wasn't. That was his basis for the penalty, and it was flat wrong like most of their calls in the final seconds.

Per NCAA Football Rules and Interprations 2009-10

Rule 9 Sec. 1 Art.3

Intiating Contact/Targeting an Opponent
a. No player shall initiate contact and target and opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet.

b. No player shall initiate contact and target a defensless opponent above the shoulders.

This is the rule the officials used and they were wrong. I don't think it was intentional. These officials work to hard to get to that level to blow their career like that. I think it was just missed, plain and simple. I thought they called a good game until that last minute or so. That is when they let the game get away from them.

JJ's hit was clean. There is no "launching" rule in college no matter what Bob Davie says.

As an impartial fan, I thought the refs got it right. Because the ball was shielded, you couldn't really tell if he had complete possession. But you have to give the receiver the benefit of the doubt, especially since the UT defender made an illegal hit. Think about it this way, what if the uniforms had changed and it was a UT receiver.

DMO nearly got decapitated against Bama by a helmet to helmet hit and there was no flag.....didn't see any Vols complaining over that hit......by the way....how did that Liberty Bowl thingy work out for you leg humpers?

I have seen the play. I have seen the picture. Pretty sure I have already explained how the receiver could be considered a defenseless receiver. Your reading comprehension or short-term memory must be nil.

So you're saying DBs must wait for a WR to catch the ball, land in-bounds then try to tackle him?

It's really frustrating and also kinda funny when I show the pic of the hit that clearly shows janzens shoulder was on the receiver's shoulder. It's like they're blind or in complete denial that the hit was clean. It's funny how vandy fans (some of the ones I know) are the cockiest and most annoying fans while they have nothing to brag about. They mostly survive off of any kind of negative thing to happen to Tennessee. I grow up in a house of 2 vandy fans and an ohio state fan who hates tennessee but will never admit it so you understand by rant.

Definition of Unnecessary Roughness: An illegal play where a player, in the judgement of the officials, uses tactics that are above and beyond what is neccesary to block or tackle another player.

First of all... the hit looked dirty in real-time. It was a difficult call and the official called it. It was the wrong call, but I'm nit upset at the officials for that call in particular

Also... Janzen was trying to knock the ball loose... and it worked(ish)

After seeing numerous replays, it was borderline, but IMO he hit him with his shoulder.

Wouldn't have mattered had we made the stupid extra point.

Hit looked borderline to me. In real time, I can see why it was called, but the refs don't get to review hits before calling penalties. But, being the 2nd or 3rd personal foul on that drive that got NC into scoring range, plus the spike debacle, really bears a moot point. NC should have never been that close to score. We should have had the smarts to play tough, penalty free defense in the waning seconds and not give the opportunity for what happened. Botching what should be automatic extra points is inexcusable. Should have never had to rely on our D to prevent a game tying field goal. If NC had been corraled to having to score a TD, then game, set, and match. You should never be in a position to blame games on the refs. If you mentally are playing two opponents, you will lose. The only opponent that matters does not wear zebra stripes. Take care of business, and business will be good. Young team, they will learn.

These types of rules are why I cannot even watch an NFL game anymore. I use to know a catch when I saw one, but now it takes five minutes of review just to tell me why it's not a catch. I hope I'm wrong, but I see the college game going in the same direction....to much technology! My advice would be...only throw the flag when it is "obvious". Just five years ago people would have laughed if Janzen was flagged for that hit. It's football people. Players sometimes get hit hard and that's the way it should be.

last night I saw one of Ark's receiver's make a catch over the middle and get drilled from the back by an ohio st player same as Janzen's hit but no call was made. You know why? it's football. Anybody here who says he is a thug or it was a bad hit you are a panzy and you need to stop watching football. The DB's job is to seperate the ball from the receiver or back end of story.

watching it live if I were a ref I would have thrown the flag, too.

Now looking at the replay I also know that I would have been wrong and I am glad that I am not a ref.

He missed a lot of tackles. He should have had that 58-yard TD run. Absolutely bonehead penalty, but they should have stopped it back at the QB.

We are not talking bout the missed tackle. We are talking about the terrific hit he put on the TE which drew a flag.

I realize he was trying to jar the ball loose with a hard hit but, you can't launch and spear in that manner in college or the NFL. It is to protect a defenseless receiver some have been paralysed like D. Stingley who took a launch and spear hit I believe by Jack Tatum about 30 years ago.

Thank God it's still 2010 because I would hate to have the dumbest post of the year get wasted in the first few moments of 2011. Thank you ma'am for being early. :hi:

So does this mean I win Dumbest Post for 2010 at least?

Gotta love the moronic replies that include no counterpoint and just insults, though. May want to use what brain cells you actually do possess next time, kind sir.

To me the question is not whether it was a clean hit. Was it smart of him to launch his body into the WR the way he did and the answer is no. More importantly, why was the WR THAT freaking wide open down the field while we were in a prevent package!!

Players, both college and NFL, know officials are out looking for unnecessarily violent collisions and guys who are going for big hits while not tackling fundamentally. So the second he left the ground and threw his body like that to make a big hit, even if it is technically legal because you can "launch yourself" and no helmet to helmet contact was made, runs the risk of drawing a penalty because leaving the ground isn't fundamental tackling and the intent was to hit the guy as hard as possible, putting both players' healths in jeopardy in instances like that.

In this case, someone blew the coverage and JJ panicked.

J/K! That's dumb logic! No responsibility on the players EVAR!!! The refs and ESPN hates us! Bawwwwwwwww!

PS. The poll options are still stupid. A little grey area would be swell.

According to some, Jackson has had many good hits lately....clean and smooth.

GAVOLBOY, why don't you just use the N word like you mean. A thug? because he hit hard? GFU

Now mister smart arse, after things have played out like they have can you understand what I was saying without interjecting racism where it was never intended?

Worst bump ever IMO. I'm outta here--gonna go bump the Dooley crotch-grab thread and show you how it's done.
