Was Dooley classless?

...I've seen QBs take a knee at that point. I can't remember how much time was left :)30s?) and how many TOLs each team had

This is the correct thing to do imo. I assume Dooley has seldom been ahead by that much before -- huge fan of CDD but next time it would be classier to just take a knee.

To do otherwise reminds me of Spurrier or Florida when Tebow was playing. Say what you want but Saban and Alabama I believe would take a knee in that situation.

Perhaps we are so young CDD wants those young guys to experience getting into the endzone.

This has already been discussed in the montana game thread. I was nearly crucified by many on here for pointing out that this may have been the reason for the "classless" fly by post game handshake by montana's head ball coach.

The "fly by" post game handshake was not the head coach Robin Pflugrad, it was the DC Mike Breske. After he shakes hands with Dooley, he points out where Pflu is, and then Dooley makes his way to Pflu, where they shake hands and have a brief

No, it's like being up 8 runs in a game and not swinging anymore.
That this is even a discussion is ridiculous. Fulmer passing with Peyton in these situations would be what you are referring to. DD wasn't padding stats.

Thanks for the clarification. Not suprised some in our camp got it wrong. Thought the Griz played hard - were well coached and just couldn't keep up with two or three of our guys that will be playing on Sundays. Good luck to you guys the rest of the season.

Not rediculous because more times than not - high school or college in that situation the coach has his qb take a knee. It's not the end of the world and certainly not as bad as passing or kicking a field goal but if you can take a knee and let the clock run out most but not all coaches will take the knee.

Call Hyems and have them research it tomorrow.

the clock wasn't going to run out

I thought someone said there was 30 seconds left? I left early in the fourth so ------- I assumed there was 30 seconds left and yes I know what happens when you ass u me.

Someone respond quick so I can get off this number.

Jimmy Johnson's quote from long ago, along with the quote from Bill Parcells, pretty much sums up how I feel about this:

New York Jet Coach Bruce Coslet criticized Jimmy Johnson of Dallas when Johnson called a double safety blitz with a 21-point lead late in the Cowboys' 28-7 victory. Johnson laughed it off.

"I guess I ought to send a memo out to all the 27 other teams that if they try to score, we're going to try to stop them," he said. "I'd do it again. If somebody would tell me what defenses we're supposed to play at the end of the game, I'd appreciate it."

I never got mad at Spurrier for trying to "run up the score". I only got mad at our idiots for not being able to stop him.

I've seen this scenario lots of times. The only time I've seen them take a knee is if the clock would run out. It would not have run out. Put in the backups and run the ball is by far what I've seen the most. Your mileage may vary of course.

My advice would be to know the situation yourself, especially prior to discussing if an act is classless.
As stated, the clock wasn't running out with a knee.

I heard Dave Hart will no longer allow UT to go for any fourth downs. He will also encourage quick kicks.

I thought I was done with Vol Nation, but I feel compelled to reply to this thread.

Dooley was not classless at all. For several reasons:

1. It was the 2nd string O not the 1st string.
2. If he was trying to run up the score he would have passed the ball a lot more in the 2nd half.
3. I think with UT's recent history of Goal line issues, it was a good game time opportunity to work on that play. After all at that point the game was decided and it was essentially a scrimmage. You paid us to play, so lets play.
4. It provided Montana the opportunity to come home with a nice positive on the day.

I had a great time this weekend. All the Vol fans I met were great. We are already looking a head at the schedule and planning for our next trip out.

Thanks for the hospitality!

i thought Poole ran the ball on that play

Actually it was tom smith. For all you guys that pretend to know football i'm guessing to be a class act we should have let our 4th string RB Tom Smith attempt the FG next time.

Personally, OP, I think your ND buddy is clueless and sour that his team is struggling. CDD embodies class when I think of the sport of football and his profession particularly. JMO. Nothing about that situation was classless. Running up the score, late in the game, and on 4th down. He gave Montana a chance to stop them instead of taking the easy points (FG).
