...for attempting a 4th and goal late in the game? I for one think we needed the goal line experience (obviously more so after the result of the play) but a ND buddy of mine was giving me crap about how we'd pitch a fit when Spurrier would run up the score. "Your coach is classless," he complained.

I also saw this on SportsbyBrooks about the Akron coach after the giving OSUs rookie coach an earful after attempting to pad the stats of OSUs RB late in the game.

I'm reminded of what an opponent coach once said to Bill Parcells after Parcells complained about running up the score: "my job is not to keep my team out of the end zone, it's yours"

Was our starting O-linemen still in the game? I know we had our backup QB and RB in.

UT threw only 25 times. They ran it over 40. Had it been balanced... UT would have scored well north of 50 pts. This is a pretty feeble charge considering how much worse it could have been for MT.

...I've seen QBs take a knee at that point. I can't remember how much time was left :)30s?) and how many TOLs each team had

Not classless at all. Stupid question. We've got a team that was full of sophs on the OL, and theirs was full of Seniors. We were merely trying to get reps for our younger backfield and OL. Big deal...

Kicking a FG would have been sure points and our kicker could have used the practice. We turned it over on downs another time in field goal range, too, and put the brakes on our passing game early on. The coaches went out of their way not to run up the score.

tell your ND fan that his season is already over once again and to enjoy going 0-2 this weekend...tell him the keep the VOLS out of his mouth forever...

does he know who was in the game? or how easy we took it on Montana because we did not want to embarrass anyone?

It is the defense's job to stop the opposing offense from scoring.

It is the offense's job to score.

Both are true at the start of the game and at the end of the game.

You play a full 60 minutes.

And we were running our 2nd/3rd string. It is unfair to ask those kids who work just as hard to see the field as the 1st stringers (sometimes harder) to go out and half-a** it.

Just another example of writers writing who never played a competitive sport.

And no, I don't get upset with opposing teams who try to do it to the Vols. Its the way the game is played.

You play for the whole game - Win, Lose, or Draw.

It would have been classless had he put the 1's back into the game to punch it in.

True. We've heard a lot about the lack of "wet ball" work in camp. Palardy, the Snapper, and the Holder could've also used the practice. Not to mention the line didn't get a chance to block for a FG all game. We already had several short yardage opportunities up to that point.

Both coaches were trying to do something to help their team's psyche. Ohio State was trying to get a kid to 100 yds. Didn't Bobby Bowden say something about the other team was responsible to stop it? If tOSU took a knee, would the Akron coach GUARANTEE that they wouldn't take a desperation heave into the end zone (for no other reason but to be a little unsportsmanlike right back)?

If it wasn't the first game, with nothing but second-stringers, and had Montana not been such a tough opponent, after the O-line's rather dismal performance the rest of the game, I don't think anything like this would've come up. Probably will never see this team do anything like this again.

You never wanna see your team getting stomped. But it's up to your team to keep the other team from stomping you. Montana did an outstanding job of being vastly out-talented but they refused to ever let up or just quit. They played for 60 minutes, and that, with the time left remaining in the game and the other factors I mentioned are the reason for what they did in the red zone.

It'd be bizarre if you took a knee and handed the ball to the other team with 3 1/2 minutes to go.

"Was Dooley Classless?" = an idiotic grab for attention.

This has already been discussed in the montana game thread. I was nearly crucified by many on here for pointing out that this may have been the reason for the "classless" fly by post game handshake by montana's head ball coach.

Good gracious. I enjoy this place, and you'd think fb season would be the best time, but I'm considering retirement.

Dooley is coaching his team. Teaching, training, coaching...and using the means he has available to do it. I don't care what any other fan thinks.

I think the result shows we need a lot of practice running that play, 1st or 2nd string...
