Russian Central Bank jacked up interest rates from 8.5% to 12% today to battle slumping Ruble.

A 3.5% increase - in one move - obviously smacks of desperation. In comparison, our Fed raised rates by 1% several times recently - which was the largest single moves it has ever made.

The Ruble overnight recovered from yesterday's high of 102 back to around 98 this morning. Regardless, I doubt this will cure the root issue for Russia, as its imports are rising while its exports are shrinking and its war spending is going through the roof - artificially juicing its GDP in the short run.

This is normal......In fact it was common to find military age people partying in all previous wars a few hundred miles from the "front". Just people trying to "live their lives"

uh, yeah, actually it is.

Its pretty common to see entertainment/leisure spending increase 20% in developed nations in a time of war as people try to escape from the unpleasant reality.

I keep saying it, people have completely forgotten what war actually looks like.

just because grandma was recycling her aluminum foil during the Blitz doesn't mean she wasn't also spending more money at the cinema or alcohol.

Ukraine has an active duty population of 700,000. they have about 15,000,000 military aged individuals. even if you just consider the men, thats less than 10%. and there are almost 100k women serving, so that would shift the ratio down. During WW2 we mobilized over 20% of our military aged males, and we weren't even fighting at home. meanwhile Russia deployed something like 80% of its military aged males in WW2.

Wait a second. This guy is trying to tell us that with all of the manufacturing might of NATO that Russia (essentially a 3rd world country) can outproduce the west in artillery? If that's the case we might as well pack up and cut our losses.

not that I have seen from outside the US, most comprehensive I have seen was for WW2.

*note that this study says the spending went down on recreation but notes that price controls were present during wartime. and it includes a couple things I don't think of for recreation. They include education as entertainment, and don't really explain what personal care means, separated from medial care.

sounds like they spent more but moved it from some categories to another.

No, he's saying this winter Russia will have more available. You can't just flip a switch and have instant artillery production.
