War in Ukraine

Being able to control the skies changes the battlefield considerably.

There really is no weapon system that exists that is going to help the Ukraine anymore than what they have had for years. The Russians don't really have control of the skies, at this stage they are testing the waters with SU-25s and helicopters for the last week+ but I wouldn't say they control the skies. The FABs don't require control of the skies, only control 20-50 miles in back of the front, generally speaking.

The glide bombs and increased accuracy has increased the speed of the operation to where AA is less material.

Most of these planes are basically non-factors, although if the Ukraine can't get AA than of course I would expect more SU-25 and possibly carpet bombing areas (unlikely right now though).

The problem isn't weapon systems - its the liquidation of meat which is probably greatly faster than what is being supplied. There really is no plan.

If it wasn't for Oleg Gordievsky, Thatcher and Regan would have inadvertently provoked the Soviet Union into war. What Thatcher and Regan thought was plainly obvious to the Soviets was indeed not plainly obvious to the Kremlin.

KAL007 gave the perfect perceived motivation for Able Archer to be a ruse from the Soviet perspective.
Able Archer was the key event that motivated Reagan to try to make peace with The Soviets. He actually wanted to... wait for it... talk to them. Or what was formerly known as engage in diplomacy. But far too many neo-cons want to use the excuse of Neville Chamberlain talking to Hitler as an excuse not to have to talk to our (alleged) enemy.

Absolutely. It changes everything; tactics, strategy, platforms, training, etc.

It is also what makes the failure of various air defense platforms so fascinating for Russia. Non-Western countries have chosen a porcupine approach to the US/NATO's untouchable air superiority platforms by pouring their resources into A2/AD platforms. The failures of the S-300 and S-400 have been illuminating to the entire world's eyes; quite literally rewriting geopolitical and military strategies across the globe.

It was certainly a major turning point.

In fairness, he started the towards START a year prior. Able Archer only helped illuminate the urgency of taking a different path with the Soviet Union. Things really pivoted once Gorbachev came to office; truly, a great leader.

Well, that is debatable. There were things he did that were unnecessarily destructive for the USSR. I think he was genuine in his desire to have a more peaceful relationship with The West, but his decisions lead to Yeltsin and the raping of Russia in the 1990s.
