Walt Wells as a potential replacement for Mahoney?

Simply go back review the App State game tape from 2016. Then come back here with a straight face and convince me anyone having anything to do with that OL has what it takes to be promoted or kept on staff.

Every "Good" Coach will tell you the only thing that can't be taught is size. We have 6'5- 300+lbs guys all across the line. These guys were getting worked by 260 lb def linemen. Why? Because they are big, but not well coached. They need to be taught how to use these mammoth bodies, but,in my opinion, how can you teach a 6'5 300lb guy to move when you're not 6'5 and 300lbs?? I think that a true position Coach should be one that played the position and knows how to move that large of a body.

Wouldn't be surprised if this happens soon. A joint announcement of Wells/Hoke similar to the promotion and hiring of Scott/Canales.

He certainly has plenty of experience in that role.

Offensive line coach Don Mahoney is in the final months of his contract, and should the Vols decide to make a change, they could promote quality control coach Walt Wells to the full-time position.

Also in the mix for the offensive line vacancy under Will Muschamp at South Carolina, Wells recently coached that position at New Mexico State, Western Kentucky and South Florida, and he's respected by Tennessee's current linemen, with whom he has forged a bond since arriving on campus nearly a year ago.

When I read Wells was taken on a recruiting trip after the bowl game, that makes me feel Mahoney is being let go when his contract is up, and Butch wanted to see how Wells did in a living room. The big question I have is how did that go? If Butch was satisfied, then Wells gets promoted. But if he stunk? I guess someone else shows up and gets spotted by John Brice or somebody else at 247.

And until Butch states the changes are over, who knows? But I dare say ours is not the only program making offers, and it is the most likely time of the year for that to happen.
