Von Pearson not

I have noticed how well he blocks, mostly. He is always blocking so it's natural to miss some.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you how he's doing. WR blocking out on the perimeter and downfield is nearly impossible to evaluate on TV and I haven't really noticed anything glaring when I've been at games.

looking to be blocking very well at all, i noticed in the usc game watching it many times over the last few days, pearsons blocking is horrible hopefully this will improve. i also would like to note i dont see pearson getting opponents off of his teammates after they are tackled like i do some of our other players. just a thought for discussion.

Why? Just why? I really don't understand, maybe you can help me, WHY? :fool:

I've noticed that some of his downfield blocking isn't that great as well.

Tennessee vs South Carolina: Offense play by play - YouTube

At about 0:18 into this video is one
I agree on that score, but in all fairness, the SC defender used sound technique. All Pearson could do was follow the direction of the defender's hips, which were angled toward the sideline, as the last minute, he cut upfield, and Pearson wasn't able to get in front of him in time.

The only way to keep that play from happening like it did, was for Pig to get right behind his blocker....Hurd. That would force the defender to take on the block

You can't expect a receiver who is recovering from a high ankle sprain to block well. Von plays as hard as anyone out there and has been lauded by the media and coaches for his intensity. This thread is a joke

VP isnt the first WR to not be a very good blocker. I cant get my little league WR's to block very good.
Nice observation but to be fair he hasnt really played a lot of football, as far as helping a player up that is a little much. He has played like 4 D1 games and this might be his first road game. He may be overwhelmed.

In other words, y'all saw Pig get blown up on that sweep with Pearson out in front on the first drive against SC.

I can't resist adding on to this. Granted, Von did whiff on this particular block. Question, how many running plays did UT run with Pearson on the field? So far, this play is the only one that has been used as an example and it was one of the first plays of the first drive of the game. It was very easy to see this one because of the design of the play. Do we have the video evidence to show that his blocking was that bad all game long? Why don't we point out every other bad block by every player on the team? My main issue is this; I know the message board is meant for fans to discuss, opine, rant gripe, whine and praise. i don't understand why individual players would be called out for a single bad play for no reason. This same fan base blasts the coaching staff if the call out a player during a press conference, but will not hesitate to post something like this. The very fact that it is stated that he doesn't help get defensive players off his VOL teammates is a statement that has no other purpose but to put him in a "Prima Donna" niche. Without further analysis and data to back up statements like this, it just becomes petty.

I apologize for the length and tone of this post, but the continual influx of negativity toward the team has really gotten old. My blood runs VOL orange and it boils at the agendas of some members of this site. TIFWIW.

You realize we're all here to discuss UT football in a fishbowl, right? Since when is critiquing a player's blocking considered "negative crap." I'm not saying I agree with the thread topic, but come on. I think it's okay to discuss potential areas that might need improvement.

Yeah, you're right. It just struck me as gratuitous, excessive and unnecessary. Maybe I've been watching too many youtube videos of puppies lately.

Have to admit, the fishbowl aspect of this makes me question my participation and is the main reason you see a pretty modest post count from me. It's human nature and isn't going to change, I get that. But all this fixation on and criticism and occasional (sometimes very frequent) vitriol directed at 18-22 year old kids is just unseemly to me.

I also get that some of this comes with the territory, but it is so much more extreme than when I played back in the 70s.

I remember a play - we were in a "flip flop" formation with a counter up the middle called. Defense happened to call a stunt that play, put a linebacker in 3 point over the center and the other linebacker on his hip. I audibled to get us to the edge with an option but the tailback never heard it. Read the DE, made a perfect pitch to... nobody. (He would have run untouched for 50 yards if he'd been there.) The newspaper article the next day specifically identified that play. It sucked. But the fallout was over a day later, life went on. The "fans" and boosters might have been thinking and talking amongst themselves that I was "horrible" or worse, but it didn't get hashed out and immortalized in VikingNation for all the world to see.

Anyway, bottom line is I just think people should be a little more circumspect about criticism of kids who, no doubt, are busting their a$$es and are wanting to do the best they possibly can for their team.

Coaches are a different matter.

I get your point and I certainly think we have some who go too far on occasion. I just didn't take this thread as one of those instances. Based on the responses, however, maybe I'm in the minority. Either way, it's just my opinion. Thanks for the response. :hi:

In retrospect, I agree - mild in comparison to what happens sometimes. I think in this case it was just the incongruity of, with the SC win, we finally have something to celebrate other than "right direction" and it just seemed unnecessary to find something to criticize. I overreacted.

Nah, it's all good. You're entitled to your opinion and it's one shared by many others it seems. I just didn't fully understand the logic. :hi:

One thing I bet we all agree on: I would like to see Von make some dynamic plays with the ball in his hands down the stretch in these last three games. We know he's capable.

Post more often munsterlander.

Dont give a crap how good he blocks....give him the ball. I'm sure there's got to be a room full of folks that can show him how to cheat block in many ways in a day. A WR catches damn balls and does it well. And as far as 'getting guys off our guys'....do you know how big some of these guys are? It's hard to tell from the cheap seats but WR dont get in the scrum.
